Previsit on preparation for WANO peer review took place at the Kursk NPP

The visit of the WANO delegation* took place from 4 to 9 July 2021. During it, the schedule and organizational conditions for the implementation of the international peer review were confirmed. It will be carried out at the request of the Kursk NPP by a team of more than two dozen experts within 18 days of December this year. In November, the work of the control room personnel will be observed on full-scale simulators under the CPO (Crew Performance Observations) program.

During the current previsit, WANO-MC experts monitored repair work during the scheduled preventive maintenance (PM) of power unit 4. Besides, the plant employees were interviewed and taught to use the peer review methodology.

“Our plant has extensive experience in conducting peer reviews, support missions, and other WANO activities,” noted Vyacheslav Fedyukin, director of the Kursk NPP. “We actively share our best practices, use the experience of other NPPs that we apply, take into account the proposals of our partners to improve our activities. Thanks to this interaction, we see much more than we would have seen without cooperation with partners.”

“During our visit, a sufficient number of observations of the PM was carried out, - said the team leader, WANO-MC expert Mikhail Sharov. “All organizational issues have also been managed. The staff of the Kursk NPP interacted well; they exchanged views openly and frankly, so thanks very much for this. The atmosphere was favorable, which allowed our tea to perform absolutely all tasks despite the difficult time of the Covid-19 pandemic.”

At the final meeting, the experts presented and handed over a package of observation reports to the management of the Kursk NPP. The parties also signed a protocol on organizing the upcoming peer review.
