26.09.2019  THE INFORMATION AND PUBLIC RELATION DEPARTMENT OF NOVOVORONEZH NPP

The Novovoronezh NPP and the nuclear city were visited by the team from the German Gundremmingen NPP as a part of the cooperation program

The specialists from the Gundremmingen NPP have visited the Novovoronezh NPP as a part of the bi-lateral Agreement on research and development cooperation between the nuclear power plants.

The aim of the German delegates is to exchange their experience with the Russian colleagues and to take part in the International science and technology conference ’55 years of safe VVER-NPP operation in Russia and all around the world’ dedicated to the anniversary of the Novovoronezh NPP’s 1st power block launch.

‘We are now running a C power block, which will be in operation until 2021, so we will have a lot to discuss with our colleagues in Novovoronezh: the safety culture, decommissioning, equipment deactivation, media and PR activities, and many more. The Novovoronezh NPP has both running and shut down power blocks, and we are highly impressed with how they work. It has been very exciting to look at how the Novovoronezh NPP is developing’, Reisinger Hubert, the head of the delegation and the head of the ‘Technological equipment’ department at the Gundremmingen NPP, said.

The guests have visited the Training center where Russian and foreign nuclear power industry experts do their classes. The German team also went to see the block’s control room, the machinery hall of the innovative 3+ generation 6th power block with the most powerful reactor in the modern Russian atomic power – VVER-1200. Last but not least, the guests attended the observation deck where they could appreciate how impressive the production unit is.

While at the museum of the Novovoronezh NPP, the specialists of the Gundremmingen NPP learnt about the history of inception and development of nuclear power in Russia, the outstanding scientists behind it, and the unique archived documents. During the trip around Novovoronezh, the guests could see the facilities that were constructed according to the Agreement between the government of the Voronezh region and the Rosatom State Corporation – the ‘Ostalnaya’ ice rink, the ‘Start’ stadium, and the Center of martial arts.

Novovoronezh NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom JSC (a part of the largest Division of Rosatom State Corporation – Electric Power Division). The Plant is situated on the River Don bank 42 km South of Voronezh. This is the first NPP of Russia with VVER type reactors (Water-Water Power Reactors of containment type with water under pressure). Three reactors of the Plant are the main ones – the prototypes of the serial power reactors. The first power unit was commissioned in 1964, the second one - in 1969, the third one – in 1971, the fourth one – in 1972, and the fifth one – in 1980.

The power units No 1 and No 2 were shut down in 1984 and 1990, respectively. The power unit No 3 was shut down in 2016 for the decommissioning events. The power unit No 4 was shut down for modernization works. The power unit No 1 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 was commissioned on 27 February, 2017. The power unit No 2 is in the stage of commissioning works.
