WANO Corporate Peer Review has been accomplished at Novovoronezh NPP

On April 13, 2011 the Corporate Peer Review, held by the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) at all Russian nuclear plants from April 9 to 22, was accomplished at Novovoronezh NPP.

The aim of the Peer Review is to improve the level of corporate interrelation in Rosenergoatom Concern in the providing of safe and reliable NPP operation, and also in using international experience in this field.

As the Head of the expert group, Director of WANO Atlantic Centre, David Farr claimed, “We are considering the efficiency of Rosenergoatom Concern corporate management through the prism of its work with the NPPs. That was why the international experts went to the NPPs in order to get a better view of the work of the whole complicated mechanism”.

During WANO experts’ work at NVNPP, the meetings with the plant administration and the specialists of operating and repair services were organized. The experts estimated the corporate management, corporate supervision and control, corporate support, personnel resources and the interrelation of Novovoronezh NPP and Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC specialists.

During the inspection the experts paid attention to the NPP emergency preparedness. The first deputy of Novovoronezh NPP Chief Engineer Anatoly Fedorov noted: “Novovoronezh NPP emergency preparedness deserved the experts’ high estimation. At our disposal there are devices for accidents management. Among them there is a mobile diesel generator and a mobile pump unit. This equipment is able to provide autonomous electric feeding of the power units’ own needs and to perform water supply to steam generators for the purpose of residual steam outlet.

WANO team of experts is subdivided into four groups; each will attend two of the Russian plants. When the review program at Novovoronezh NPP was over, the group of David Farr started the similar work at Kursk NPP.

Novovoronezh NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is situated on the bank of the Don River, 42 km to the south of Voronezh. This is the first Russian NPP with VVER-type reactors (pressurized water reactors of the vessel type using light pressurized water).

Since the beginning of 2011 Novovoronezh NPP has produced 2041.6 M kWh of electric power. Power unit No.5 is undergoing the 200th day of repair and the complex of events aimed at its service life prolongation.
