The Novovoronezh NPP has received a Rostechnadzor license for new-generation power block No.6 operation with VVER-1200 reactor
On March 22, 2016, the Federal Environmental, Industrial and Nuclear Supervision Service of Russia (Rostechnadzor) has issued a license for power block No.6 nuclear installation to the Novovoronezh NPP.
This license opens the way for the new power block physical launch and further exploitation.
Prior to the issue Rostechnadzor has carried out targeted inspection and post-control verification. The Rostechnadzor Central office management has checked the readiness of the reactor compartment facility, the safety system compartment, the modular switch desk, the alternate switch desk, the refueling machine control system compartment, and all the start-up facilities accident prevention status. The commission has fully ensured that the power block No.6 meets all criteria for obtaining a license.
The new-generation power block exploitation license for VVER-1200 reactor enables the NPP personnel to start the works related to core fueling. The supervisory authorities will also oversee the technological procedure of fuel elements loading into the reactor starting with fresh fuel transportation from the storage.
According to the Novovoronezh NPP director Vladimir Povarov, the core fueling mechanism at the new power block is completely different from the serial blocks operating VVER reactors. “At the moment we upload the fuel assembly imitators into the reactor’s active zone to cater for security. All the equipment for neutron-flux monitoring has been installed. The reactor itself is filled with boric acid solution, and our specialists monitor its concentration 24/7. The unparalleled security measures underscore our main requirement towards the new power block: it has to launch safely”, he said.
Since June 2007, Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC has been involved into the construction of the two new-generation Novovoronezh NPP power generation plants based on the NPP-2006 project as the owner and the developer. The construction is carried out in accordance with the operational program of the national nuclear corporation ROSATOM enacted by the Government of the Russian Federation in the Resolution No. 705 dated September 20, 2008, and is funded at the expense of Rosenergoatom and the asset contribution. VVER-1200 reactor units will operate at the new LM NPP blocks.
The VVER-1200 RU project complies with all Russian and international security standards. Its main differentiator is the improved security system that makes the project’s security parameters second to none. The construction general contractor is JSC "NIAEP" – JSC ASE “Atomenergoproject”, the general designer - JSC “Atomenergoproject”, the general reactor unit designer – OKB “GIDROPRESS”.
