Smolensk NPP successfully passed the audit for conformance to the international standard

Smolensk NPP annual report on occupational safety issues complies with international standard requirements. It was reported by Valentin Dzedik, Chief of the Volgograd branch of certification association “Russky Registr” and Experts Group Leader, when summarizing the SNPP financial audit results.

Auditors of Russky Registr Association and experts of Klinsk Institute of Occupational Safety and Conditions estimated the occupational safety and personnel health management system at the NPP for its compliance with OHSAS 18001:2007 international standard. The NPP is planning to undergo a certification of the occupational safety and personnel health management system this year.

Smolensk NPP has already received the certificate conforming national standards compliance, but the certification system, adopted in Russia, makes special reference to assessment of individual work places. And the international standard requires a constant evaluation of the potential risks on every work place and development of plan for their regular elimination. This process continuity is a key difference and novelty, which is brought in work safety activity by management system, which was set up and certificated in compliance with OHSAS 18001:2007 standard.

“Personnel work safety and work places quality improvement concern is an important task for Smolensk NPP management”, Work Safety Department Chief German Kuzmin underlined. “Receipt of the international certificate confirms this fact on the part of independent auditor. Gaining an effective tool and base for accident risks reduction, we will raise the common operational efficiency. Furthermore, the certification is necessary for interaction with IAEA in the course of OSART mission and management system integration”.

At present stage Smolensk NPP successfully performs preliminary work and it has showed good results in the course of the explorative audit.

Smolensk NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. Every year SNPP supplies to the country electric power system at the average about 20 bln kilowatt-hours of electric power equal to almost 13% of power generated in Rosenergoatom Concern and to more than 80% of that generated by the power plants of Smolensk region.
