Rostov NPP: power unit No.1 has been shut down for scheduled preventive maintenance

On April 10, 2011 power unit No.1 of Rostov NPP was shut down for 55 days of scheduled preventive maintenance in accordance with the “Schedule for Repair of Russian Nuclear Power Units in 2011”, approved by the authorities of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSV.

Within the framework of SPM-2011 preventive maintenance will be implemented in reactor and turbine compartments of the nuclear power plant. Specialists will replace nuclear fuel and perform protective treatment and inspection of the unit equipment as well as remanufacturing operations. Observers-controllers, chosen from highly qualified specialists of NPP subdivisions, will monitor the quality of work performance at each stage.

The main objective facing the maintenance personnel is to implement the SPM in due time, with high quality of works and compliance with all safety rules and regulations. A repair headquarters under the leadership of Chief Engineer of the plant Andrey Salnikov was established in order to implement this objective successfully.

The works involved in internal maintenance personnel - 408 people and the staff of contracting organization - 1,511 people. All contracting organizations, engaged in SPM, have licenses of Russian Gosatomnadzor for the right to perform these works.

In order to perform a successful SPM-2011, special attention will be paid to the target values of Rosatom production system, which contributes to optimizing of the working time loss during equipment repair as well as to implementation of the major overhaul within 50 days.

Scheduled preventive maintenance of power unit systems and equipment is the essential component of Rosatom’s production and commercial operations, aimed at assurance of power unit safe and reliable operation in the inter-repair period.

Rostov NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The nuclear power plant is located on the bank of the Tsimlyansk Reservoir 13.5 km far from Volgodonsk city. The plant operates two power units with VVER-1000 reactors with installed capacity of 1,000 MW. Power unit No.1 was put into commercial operation in 2001, power unit No. 2 – in December of 2010. Power units Nos. 3 and 4 are being constructed since 2009.
