One of the most full-scale projects of technical assistance in the enterprise history has been accomplished at Kola NPP

On April 14, 2011 the final meeting on the program of TACIS technical assistance was held. The program on the improvement of nuclear and radiation safety had been developed for 20 years. TACIS is the program created by the European Union in 1991 in order to contribute to acceleration of the economic reformations in CIS.

Within the frameworks of the program of technical assistance, TACIS consultants had been working at Kola NPP since 1995. In different years experts from Germany, Finland, Italy, and Spain had been cooperating in two directions: modern equipment supply and experience exchange with world leading NPPs.

Representatives of European Commission from Belgium and the specialists of Iberdrola/Sogin Syndicate (Italy, Spain) took part in the final meeting. Kola NPP Chief Engineer Alexander Ionov greeted the participants of the final meeting, having marked the significance of the implemented projects for the enterprise.

In his turn, the representative of Iberdrola/Sogin Syndicate Martin Anibal reported: ТThe projects of TACIS program have been successfully implemented. The main purpose Р the improvement of nuclear and radiation safety and, as a result, provision of NPP steady and reliable work - was achievedУ.

During the visit, foreign experts examined the installed equipment and discussed the results of the project implementation, realized at the NPP, with the plant management and specialists.

Within the frameworks of the TACIS project the equipment for the complex of liquid radioactive wastes recycling for the amount of over 9 M ? was installed at Kola NPP, a full-scale work on the improvement of safety at power units Nos. 3 and 4 was carried out. The bleeders were changed, and the system of steam generator control was introduced. The implementation of individual dosimetric control electronic system became one of the last projects. Besides, equipment of fire protection was purchased due to the assistance program.

By the time of the project accomplishment the TACIS program total contribution into Kola NPP safety improvement was equal to more than 18 M ?.

ТDue to the use of West TACIS progressive experience and the operation of modern highly technological equipment, Kola NPP safety is on a high level, which is regularly proved by experts and supervisory bodiesУ, - Alexander Ionov underlined.

Kola NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is located 200 km to the south of Murmansk on the bank of Lake Imandra. Power unit No.1 of Kola NPP was commissioned in 1973. Currently, the plant operates 4 power units with VVER-type reactors. Each reactor has capacity of 440 mW. Kola NPP supplies power for Murmansk region and Karelia.
