An emergency response drill has been held at Kola NPP

On April 6, 2011 Kola NPP held a plant exercise, which trained emergency response and personnel actions in case of a beyond design basis accident.

Such exercises are held in April at all Russian NPPs in order to train actions of emergency services, plant managers and personnel.

During the exercise, the scenario of which involved a complete de-energizing of all plant power units and complete loss of cooling water at reactor plants, the NPP personnel showed readiness to act within the framework of a beyond design basis accident as well as to transfer and maintain reactor plants in a safe and controlled state.

There were also examined some internal resources for off-nominal situations: diesel pump units (DPU) and a mobile autonomous diesel generator system. This equipment is unique and is intended for use in emergency situations, including beyond design basis accidents.

Summarizing the exercise results, Chief Engineer of Kola NPP Alexander Ionov noted that the Emergency Response Committee of the nuclear power plant, which had controlled the exercise, had been convinced of the quality and reliability of control, warning and communication systems as well as of the readiness of technical equipment and personnel to take the necessary measures for correction of conventional accident consequences.

Kola NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is located 200 km to the south of Murmansk on the bank of Lake Imandra. Power unit No.1 of Kola NPP was commissioned in 1973. Currently, the plant operates 4 power units with VVER-type reactors. Each reactor has capacity of 440 mW. Kola NPP supplies power for Murmansk region and Karelia.
