Russian nuclear power plants have generated about 4.6 trillion kWh power over 30 years of operation, which in total exceeds the four-year power consumption of the entire country

On September 7, 2022, Rosenergoatom (part of Rosatom State Corporation) celebrates its anniversary — exactly 30 years ago, disparate Russian NPPs merged into a single operating organization.

Who are we today?

l     The largest generating company in Russia, ranked 1st in total power generation and 2nd in the world in terms of installed NPP capacity.

l     The only NPP operator in Russia and one of the largest players in the Russian electricity market.

l     11 operating nuclear power plants with 37 power units in operation with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW (including FNPP).

l     The share of nuclear generation in the country is about 20% of the total power generation.

What do we produce?

The main activity of the company is the production of electrical and thermal energy by nuclear power plants.

In 2021, the total power generation by Russian nuclear power plants amounted to 222.437 billion kWh, which exceeded the record value set by all nuclear power plants in the USSR in 1988.

By September 7, Russian NPPs had generated almost 150 billion kWh of power since the beginning of this year, exceeding the FAS Russia's target by 2.36%.

What have we done over the past 30 years?

Over the past 30 years of work, since the formation of Rosenergoatom in 1992:

l     About 4.6 trillion kWh have been generated, which exceeds the total power consumption of the entire country for 4 years.

l     12 nuclear power units have been built, as well as the northernmost nuclear power plant in the world (in Chukotka) - a unique floating nuclear thermal power plant (FNPP) consisting of 2 reactor units.

l     More than 1.1 million tons of fish were released into near-station reservoirs as part of ecological programs for stocking with fish.

What’s happening now?

l     The construction of the Kursk NPP-2, which is being built according to the advanced innovative project of PWR-TOI, continues. In the summer of this year, the main event of the year was completed at the KuNPP-2 site – the reactor vessel was installed in the final position at the first power unit.

l     In August of this year, preparatory work began at the sites of future power unit No. 7, 8 of the Leningrad NPP and No. 1 and 2 of the Smolensk NPP-2.

l     We produce more than 20% of the world's consumption of cobalt-60 used in the sterilization of medical devices and materials, the development of the isotope business.

l     Rosenergoatom took the sixth place in Russia in terms of racks of Data Processing Centers (DPCs) put into operation. At the moment, three data processing centers are already operating: the Kalininsky data center in the Tver region, the Xelent data center in St. Petersburg, and the StoreData data center in Moscow. 5 more data center construction sites in various regions of the country are at the development stage. In 2023, it is planned to launch the Arktika data center at the site of the Kola NPP in the Arctic.

How do we affect the presence regions?

Nuclear generation is one of the main types of green carbon-free energy. Thanks to Russian nuclear power plants, more than 100 million tons of carbon dioxide do not enter the atmosphere during the year (such a volume of carbon dioxide would enter the atmosphere if this power was produced at thermal power plants).

As one of the largest enterprises in the electric power industry, Rosenergoatom has a significant impact on the social and economic well-being of society and the environment, both at the level of the territories where nuclear power plants are located and the regions where business is conducted, and at the global level.

In 2021, Rosenergoatom transferred taxes amounting to a total of 21.21 billion rubles to the budgets of the regions where there are operating NPPs (excluding paid income tax from the consolidated group of taxpayers of Rosatom companies, which includes Rosenergoatom).
