The reactor shaft wire frame has been installed at the Kursk NPP-2 2nd power unit

A large building unit of the reactor shaft with the weight of 70 tons and the diameter of 11.9 meters has now been installed at the Kursk NPP-2 construction site at its designed position in the middle of the 2nd power unit. This is the second circle of the shaft under construction, as the first one was installed last November.

‘The reactor shaft has to be assembled and concreted by May 30, 2020’, Alexey Volnov, the chief engineer of the Kursk NPP-2, noted. ‘Following that, we will commence the installation of the cantilever truss, which is a critical element of the safety system protecting the reactor and the molten core catcher’s service lines’.

The team from JSC ‘Trest RosSEM’ was working on the reactor shaft wire frame installation, with the same team setting up a structure to produce reinforced metal units next to the construction site. It took them 6 weeks to complete the job.

At present, 43 facilities are under way at the Kursk NPP-2 construction site, those including the reactor and the turbine buildings of two power units, spray ponds, replenishment stations, the 1st power unit’s evaporative cooling tower, etc.
