At the construction site of Kursk NPP-2 the key operation of the year – the reinforcing of the bed plate of the power unit No 2 reactor building – started ahead of schedule

On 7 December, 2018 the main key event of the year – the reinforcing of the bed plate of the power unit No 2 reactor building – started at Kursk NPP-2 ahead of the schedule set by Rosatom State Corporation.

Trest Rossem JSC specialists started the reinforcement placement of the bottom flange of the bed plate. After that they will start the assembly of the reinforced metal blocks. In total 105 reinforced metal blocks for a total weight of 1,600 tons will be installed at the bed plate. This will allow to proceed to the pouring of the first concrete in to the bed plate of the power unit No 2 reactor building in the first half of 2019.

“The beginning of the reinforcing of the bed plate of the power unit No 2 reactor building is the next step in the implementation of the strategic task of Rosatom State Corporation and Rosenergoatom JSC in creation of the newest, most advanced product in the area of the high nuclear technologies for Russian and international markets”, Vyacheslav Fedyukin, Kursk NPP Manager, commented on the event. “The work ahead of schedule was achieved due to the improvement in the technology and consideration of the experience gained during the works at the first power unit.”

The reinforcing of the bed plate is carried out in several stages: the installation of the reinforcement of the bottom flange; the installation of the reinforced metal blocks; the installation of the upper flange; the installation of the connection bars for the upper construction for the rigid connection with the bed plate.

At the construction site of Kursk NPP-2 other works are in progress. At the facilities of the first power unit specialists carry out work on concreting the bed plate of the unit pump station (UPS) building – the first facility of the main water coolant system, as well as the assembly of the pipelines of RAM (the main water coolant pipelines system) within the turbine building.

In the Reinforced Metal Blocks Production Shop the works on the production of the reinforced metal blocks of the confinement of the power unit No 1 reactor building are completed. This will allow to proceed to the installation of the first layer of the inner containment dome in May, 2019.

At the second power unit the works on installation of concrete building coat of the reactor-auxiliary building have been started.

A total number of the production workers is nearly 2,900 people at all facilities.

The Generation III+ power units No 1 and No 2 of KuNPP-2 are the pilot power units that are being constructed by the VVER-TOI design (Water-Water Energy Reactor Universal Optimized Digital). This is the new design created by Russian designers (ASE Group of companies, the Engineering Division of Rosatom State Corporation) on the basis of the technological decisions of VVER-1200 design.

The power units of the Generation III+ possess the improved technical and economical characteristics. In comparison with power units of the previous generation (VVER-1000) the unit’s power has been increased by 25% up to 1,255 MW. The lifetime of the main equipment has been increased two times. At the expense of the high automation the personnel number has been reduced by 30-40%. In comparison with other power units of Generation III+ (power units No 1 and No 2 of Novovoronezh NPP (No 2 is under construction) and No 1 and No 2 of Leningrad NPP (No 1 is in the Low Power Testing stage, and No 2 is under construction)) the VVER-TOI design suggests the significant reduction of the construction value, terms and operating costs.

New power units of KuNPP meet the most advanced requirements of the IAEA in the area of safety. A number of the up-to-date safety systems is applied: melt trap of the active core and the system of the afterheat removal passive system that allows to cool the active core during power supply failure at the expense of the natural air circulation. In comparison with the already constructed power units of Generation III+ the VVER-TOI design has a number of the additional safety measures. Thus, the power unit is designed to stand the Magnitude 8-9 earthquake against Magnitude 7 earthquake in the VVER-1200 design.
