The works on reinforcing the bed plate of the first facility of the main cooling water system of the power unit No 1 – Unit Pump Station building - started at the construction site of Kursk NPP-2

At the construction site of Kursk NPP-2 replacement plant the works on reinforcing the bed plate of the Unit Pump Station (UPS) building – the first facility of the main cooling water system of the innovative VVER-TOI* power unit No 1 – started.

The Unit Pump Station is situated between turbine house and evaporative cooling tower. It is designed for provision of the circulation of the cooling water through the turbine condensers with the supply of the heated water to the cooling tower.

Before the reinforcing of the bed plate of the UPS building, the artificial foundation bed was built. The personnel of Kurchatov branch of SMU-1 JSC that works at the Plant completed the works on making the foundation mat and have started making the reinforcing of the bed plate.

The size of the Unit Pump Station is 48 to 30 metres, the height of the building is 19 metres. This is the most embedded structure among all that are being built at the construction site – minus 13 metres. The underground part of the building is functionally divided into intake portion, turbine house, and auxiliary equipment facility.

The width of the bed plate of the Unit Pump Station will be three metres. The specialists are going to complete the reinforcing works till the end of this month and proceed to the concreting of the bed plate of the UPS.

Kursk NPP-2 is the replacement plant of the power units of the operating Kursk NPP that are to be decommissioned. It is planned to commission the first two power units of NPP-2 with the new VVER-TOI reactor type simultaneously with the decommissioning of the power units No 1 and No 2 of the now operating Plant.

For the reference:

* The Generation 3+ power units No 1 and No 2 of KuNPP-2 are the pilot power units that are being constructed by the VVER-TOI design (Water-Water Energy Reactor Universal Optimized Digital). This is the new design created by Russian designers (ASE Group of companies, the Engineering Division of Rosatom State Corporation) on the basis of the technological decisions of VVER-1200 design. The power units of the Generation 3+ possess the improved technical and economical characteristics. In comparison with power units of the previous generation (VVER-1000) the unit’s power has been increased by 25% up to 1,255 MW. The lifetime of the main equipment has been increased two times. At the expense of the high automation the personnel number has been reduced by 30-40%. In comparison with other power units of Generation 3+ the VVER-TOI design suggests the significant reduction of the construction value, terms and operating costs.

New power units of KuNPP meet the most advanced requirements of the IAEA in the area of safety. A number of the up-to-date safety systems is applied: melt trap of the active core and the system of the afterheat removal passive system that allows to cool the active core during power supply failure at the expense of the natural air circulation. In comparison with the already constructed power units of Generation 3+ the VVER-TOI design has a number of the additional safety measures. Thus, the power unit is designed to stand the Magnitude 8-9 earthquake against Magnitude 7 earthquake in the VVER-1200 design.

Rosenergoatom JSC is the Developer and the technical customer of the object. ASE EC JSC is the General Designer and Contractor.

At the present time power units No 1, 2 and 4 of Kursk NPP are operated at the capacity set by dispatch schedule. The power unit No 3 is in schedule repair. The radiation background at Kursk NPP and in the control area is at the level that corresponds the normal operation of the power units and do not exceed the natural background level.
