The complex tests of a diesel generator have been finished at the power unit No 2 of Novovoronezh NPP-2

The following important stage of commissioning – the complex tests of the diesel generator set (DGS) of the standby diesel power plant (SDPP) – was completed at the pre-launch power unit No 2 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 (unit No 7 of NVNPP).

Diesel-generator sets are designed to supply a nuclear power plant with auxiliary power in the event of an emergency situation, if the main power sources are out of order. Each DGS is a single-unit power plant, which ensures the power unit’s safety on a separate line. All diesel generators (there are only three of them at the pre-launch facility) are equipped with autonomous systems for fuel, cooling, oil, starting air, heating, ventilation, and auxiliary power supply. To ensure high reliability at launch, each DGS is equipped with a duplicated actuation circuit activated by a signal from the safety control systems. The project also provides for the DGS remote launch from the NPP’s main control unit (MCU) and back-up control unit (BCU), and the local shield of the SDPP.

One of the three (the last one) diesel generator sets was launched and synchronized with the grid as part of the tests. The two others (DGS of the 1st and the 2nd security lines) were tested earlier and put on duty.

“The DGS had worked for 48 hours under load, and immediately after the tests it has been put on standby, that is, on duty. In case of an emergency, the diesel generator will provide the main equipment with power to put the reactor facility to a safe state”, the Deputy Chief Engineer on Unit Construction of NVNPP Vladimir Kazanskiy explained.

One of the conditions for the beginning of the next commissioning stage – the hot phase of the cold and hot equipment trials – is to put on duty all the diesel-generator sets. The hot trial (that is, the equipment testing at operating parameters) of unit No 2 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 (No 7 NVNPP) is scheduled for September 2018.
Novovoronezh NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom JSC (a part of the largest Division of Rosatom State Corporation – Electric Power Division). The Plant is situated on the River Don bank 42 km South of Voronezh. This is the first NPP of Russia with VVER type reactors (Water-Water Power Reactors of containment type with water under pressure). Three reactors of the Plant are the main ones – the prototypes of the serial power reactors. The first power unit was commissioned in 1964, the second one - in 1969, the third one – in 1971, the fourth one – in 1972, and the fifth one – in 1980.

The power units No 1 and No 2 were shut down in 1984 and 1990, respectively. The power unit No 3 was shut down in 2016 for the decommissioning events. The power unit No 4 was shut down for modernization works. The power unit No 1 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 was commissioned on 27 February, 2017. The power unit No 2 is in the stage of commissioning works.
