At the power unit No 2 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 under construction the hydraulic testing of the secondary circuit on consistency and strength is completed

On 10 August, 2018 at 13:40 during the cold and hot trial (CHT) stage of the equipment at the power unit No 2 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 (No 7 of NVNPP) the hydraulic testing of the secondary circuit on consistency and strength was successfully completed.

The stage of the cold and hot trials of the equipment - the last large technological operation before the physical start-up – was started on 1 August.

“The testing was carried out in accordance with the commissioning work program at the Plant”, the Deputy Chief Engineer of Novovoronezh NPP on construction of the new units Vladimir Kazanskiy commented. “The hydraulic testing of the secondary circuit on consistency is one of the stages of preparation of the power unit to the hot trial. Upon its completion the working capacity of the main and auxiliary equipment and systems of the reactor unit will be proved.”

During the hydraulic testing the secondary circuit of the reactor unit was filled with feed water (chemically demineralized water), and steam generators and their pipelines and fittings were loaded with hydraulic pressure in order to check their consistency and strength. The testing pressure created in the secondary circuit was 11.5 MPa.

The testing proved that the equipment and pipelines of the secondary circuit were produced and assembled properly, their thermohydraulic, strength, vibrational and dynamic characteristics correspond to the design characteristics.

The hydraulic testing was carried out at the cold water: at the expense of work of the main circulating pumps and electric heaters of the pressurizer the water of the primary circuit heated the water of the secondary circuit up to 100-110 °С.

Thus, the successful implementation of all testing during the cold phase of the cold and hot trials of the power unit No 2 of NVNPP-2 (No 7 of NVNPP) equipment will mean the transition to the next phase of the stage – the hot trial.

Novovoronezh NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom JSC (a part of the largest Division of Rosatom State Corporation – Electric Power Division). The Plant is situated on the River Don bank 42 km South of Voronezh. This is the first NPP of Russia with VVER type reactors (Water-Water Power Reactors of containment type with water under pressure). Three reactors of the Plant are the main ones – the prototypes of the serial power reactors. The first power unit was commissioned in 1964, the second one - in 1969, the third one – in 1971, the fourth one – in 1972, and the fifth one – in 1980.

The power units No 1 and No 2 were shut down in 1984 and 1990, respectively. The power unit No 3 was shut down in 2016 for the decommissioning events. The power unit No 4 was shut down for modernization works. The power unit No 1 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 was commissioned on 27 February, 2017. The power unit No 2 is in the stage of commissioning works.
