Rostov NPP annually allocates about 2 billion rubles to upgrade equipment and increase security – A. Salnikov, the Plant Manager

Annually about 2 billion rubles are invested in the equipment modernization and safety of nuclear, radiation, technical, and fire systems of Rostov NPP. This was announced by the Plant Manager of Rostov Nuclear Power Plant Andrey Salnikov at a meeting with the heads of main media and news agencies in the Rostov Oblast.

“Our strategic task is to ensure safe and reliable operation of nuclear power plants, this is the basis of it all”, Andrey Salnikov noted. “If we see a security deficit in any aspects of the nuclear power plant operation, we will analyze and solve the problem. NPP’s stable and trouble-free operation is our priority.”

The Manager of Russia's southernmost nuclear power plant also stressed that in 2018 the plant is going to increase its capacity due to the launch of a new, fourth power unit. “Right now the power unit No 4 is at pilot operation at 75% of power; this summer we plan to reach 100% capacity, and in autumn we will put the unit into commercial operation”, A. Salnikov stressed.

At the meeting there also have been questions concerning the contribution of Rostov NPP in environmental support and local employment. Andrey Salnikov noted that the Nuclear Plant has been investing significant funds in replenishing the biobalance of the Don River for many years by stocking it with bream and carp babies. Over the past three years, more than 66 million baby fishes were released into this reservoir. The Plant’s cooling pond also is stocked by herbivorous fish. And the population of blue-green algae is being constantly regulated.

As for the employment, Andrey Salnikov stressed that more than 3000 people worked at the Plant, and additional 2,000 peopleare at Rosenergoatom subsidiaries serving the NPP. And every yearthe Plant recruits new young specialists.

In addition to the meeting with the Manager, the media heads have received a tour to the NPP. Elena Soboleva, the Director of the Rostov branch of Komsomolskaya Pravda Publishing House, noted that she was impressed by the scale of production, the clear and well-coordinated work of the Plant’s staff, and an overall cleanness of the premises. “I have been at many enterprises, but never have I seen such tidiness as one that Rostov NPP maintains. Even a printing house, where there are only paints and papers, is much dirtier. And the main control room is like a spacecraft control center”, E. Soboleva shared her impression.

“In the turbine shop I felt the full power of the Power Plant. Rostov NPP is a grandiose enterprise, and its manager is a very competent expert, and he’s a very open person. If invited, I will definitely visit the Nuclear Power Plant again and even more than once”, the Editor-in-Chief of the TASS news agency Sergey Levanenkov said.

Rostov NPP is the branch of the Rosenergoatom Concern JSC (a part of the Electric Energy Division – the largest division of Rosatom State Corporation). The enterprise is located at the shore of Tsimlyansk Reservoir 13 km away from the town of Volgodonsk. The NPP operates the reactors of VVER-1000 type with the installed capacity of 1,000 MW. The power unit No 1 was put into industrial operation in 2001, No 2 – in 2010, No 3 – in September, 2015. The power unit No 4 was started up in February, 2018.
