Leningrad NPP: 1.5 million rubles will be spent to develop the environmental volunteer movement

The State Environmental Control Committee of the Government of Leningrad Oblast, the Public Environmental Governor’s Council and Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant signed a trilateral agreement on supporting the public movement and establishing a new contest among environmentalists. 1.5 million rubles will be allocated to develop the environmental volunteer movement.

The purpose of this contest is to support environmental and ecological actions and educational programs. The prize fund will be distributed between 3 nominations: Cleaning of forest and coastal areas; Cleaning of the municipal lands; Best video on the subject of environment protection.

The contest will be held in 3 stages:
  • from 10 June to 10 September – the participants will conduct environmental actions;
  • from 11 to 15 September - the contest committee will make its decisions;
  • 29 September – the day of the result announcement and the award ceremony.
The winners in each nomination will receive a cash prize of 250 thousand rubles, the 2nd and the 3rd places will be awarded with 150 thousand rubles and 100 thousand rubles, respectively.

The contest has become a continuation of the Clean Coast environmental campaign, which was held on the Ecologists’ Day in the Lomonosov District with the support of Leningrad NPP and with the participation of the Governor of the Leningrad Oblast, Alexandr Drozdenko.

“Such a contest is held for the first time among volunteer organizations, but it has great prospects”, the Chairman of the State Environmental Control Committee of Leningrad Oblast Mikhail Kozminykh noted. “LNPP is a reliable partner for us in many programs. Thus, an interactive map of the environmental state of Leningrad Oblast will be introduced in September, which was created with the great help from the Power Plant. In addition, the Atlas of Leningrad Oblast, also created with the support of LNPP, is being prepared for publication.”

“Rosatom's policy in the field of security includes primarily the preservation of the environment. And LNPP strictly fulfills these requirements both in its direct activities and by supporting the initiative of the public”, Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant Manager Vladimir Pereguda said. “As for the protection of the area of the Oblast from unauthorized landfills, it is necessary to develop replicable approach. We hope that public organizations will give examples of such decisions, so that legislative rules to maintain the environmental discipline could be adopted. I would like the formal procedure of the contest to give real results.”

“The volunteer movement for the nature preservation is developing. And it must be supported. People really do care about the state of the environment”, the Chairman of the Public Environmental Governor’s Council of Leningrad Oblast Yuriy Shevchuk said. “We would like the cleaned territory to stay unpolluted and clean. For this, we need this territory to remain under the control of public or other organizations. It is significant that Leningrad NPP as one of the largest industrial enterprises of the region has supported the idea of holding this contest. Long-term observations show that nuclear energy is a factor of nature preservation in our Oblast.”

To participate in the contest, the public organizations’ representatives need to send an application and information about the events to the State Environmental Control Committee of Leningrad Oblast before 10 September at gosecocontrol@lenobl.ru.

More detailed information about the contest is on the Committee’s website and on the official page of the Contest in Vkontakte.
