More than 250 foreigners have visited Beloyarsk NPP with technical tours within the International Conference on Fast Reactors held in Yekaterinburg
On 1 July 2017 the technical tours to Beloyarsk NPP of participants of International Conference on Fast Reactors and Related Fuel Cycles FR17 took place in Yekaterinburg under the aegis of the IAEA were finished. For several days Beloyarsk NPP had been visited by more than 250 foreign nuclear specialists.
At the power unit No 4 the guests were introduced with BN-800 reactor room and main control room. At the power unit No 3 (BN-600) the power house, fuel loading board and main control room were shown. The guests learnt technological characteristics of power units with fast reactors by using electrified models and schemes.
The visitors were especially impressed by BN-800 reactor room. Foreigners asked a lot of questions diving into all the design and technological details of the new power unit.
The possibility of accident-preventive reactor shutdown cooling by sodium natural circulation in the reactor circuits and air stream circulation through air cooler created the biggest emotional response from the foreign specialists. This peculiarity of BN-800 allows even in the most impossible circumstances of all pumps stop to withdraw heat from the reactor with the help of the system operating on the basis of the laws of physics that are uninterruptible and require no power supply.
The guests also admired with BN-800 rods of additional protection that float held by the coolant flow and in case of liquid sodium circulation loss fall into the active zone by gravity and stop the nuclear reaction. Since the law of universal gravitation can’t be turned off – it acts irrespective of human or automatics action.
BN-600 wasn’t neglected: the guests were interested in the modernization features that were involved in preparation for extension of power unit design life and that allowed to bring it to the up-to-date safety requirements. At fuel loading board they have got acquainted with the specificity of this process for fast reactors.
The Beloyarsk NPP has come into operation in April 1964. The first power blocks of the Beloyarsk NPP with thermal reactors AMB-100 and AMB-200 has been closed after the accumulated running time. The power block with a fast industrial capacity reactor BN-600 is still on. The power block with a fact reactor BN-800Н is currently being prepared for coming into operation.
