Novovoronezh NPP: Belarusian nuclear engineers will start using their Novovoronezh partners’ experience of radioactive waste management

Yet another training of Belarusian nuclear power plant specialists took place at Novovoronezh NPP. This time the guests were interested in the experience of putting into operation the liquid radioactive waste (RW) processing system, the specificity of this technology, and the system of RW accounting at a nuclear power plant.

“We need the experience of RW management right now – at the stage of equipment manufacturing and installation. By the time of launch of the power unit, we must already thoroughly understand all the processes and nuances. The benefits of the visit to Novovoronezh NPP are enormous. Our colleagues very thoroughly answered all the questions we were interested in”, the Head of the RW Treatment Department of Belarusian NPP Alexey Kosenkov said.

Exchange of the radioactive waste management experience was held for the guests from Belarus as part of 2015 - 2017 Rosatom Action Plan on Creation of Nuclear Energy Infrastructure at the Republic of Belarus . These events included seminars, meetings, technical tours for Belarusian specialists to Russian nuclear power plants with VVER-1200 reactors and other facilities of nuclear energy use.

This is the fourth visit of the friendly state colleagues to Novovoronezh NPP in 2017. The previous three visits were about acquaintance with experience in developing emergency response instructions for Russian nuclear power plants, acquaintance with the practice of performing calculations with the Kaskad software and practical experience in the organization of the licensing of NPP.

“From 2014 Rosenergoatom Concern is assisting in developing national nuclear infrastructure within the newcoming countries that plan to or already constructed nuclear power facilities under the Russian projects. Belarus is our closest partner, which is actively building the first nuclear plant in the Republic; for this reason we conduct such a broad and detailed program for Belarusian specialists for the transfer of practical experience in commissioning a nuclear power plant”, the Project Office Chief Specialist for Nuclear Infrastructure of Rosenergoatom Concern Fyodor Belykh said. He also added that this cooperation would not stop even after the commissioning of the Belarusian NPP 1st Unit.

“After launching the nuclear power plant, Belarusian specialists will still need support and consultations from Novovoronezh colleagues. After all, Novovoronezh NPP, where all generations VVER reference units are located, surely has accumulated the most experience in all stages of nuclear power plant’s life cycle”, Fyodor Belykh noted.

The Belarusian nuclear power plant is being constructed in the Astravets District of the Grodno Oblast under an innovative project with 3+ generation VVER-1200 reactors. Under the same project, power units of Leningrad and Novovoronezh nuclear power plants are being built in Russia. That's why Belarusian colleagues often visit Novovoronezh to exchange experiences.

The Novovoronezh nuclear power plant is a branch of the JSC "Concern Rosenergoatom". The station is located on the bank of the Don River in 42 km to the south of Voronezh. It is the Russia's first nuclear power plant with VVER reactors (water-to-water power reactors of case type with regular water under pressure). Each of five reactors of the station can be a main one – a prototype of serial power reactors: the power unit No. 1 with the VVER-210 reactor, the power unit No. 2 with the VVER-365 reactor, the No. 3, 4 power units with the VVER-440 reactors, the power unit No. 5 with the VVER-1000 reactor. The first power unit was launched in 1964, the second – in 1969, third – in 1971, fourth – 1972, fifth – 1980. There are three power units (power units No.1, 2 were stopped in 1984 and 1990 respectively) in work at the moment.

The power units Nos 1 and 2 were stopped in 1984 and 1990, respectively. The power unit No 3 was stopped in 2016 for decommissioning activities. The power unit No 1 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 was commissioned on 27 February, 2017. The power unit No 2 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 is in the middle of construction and installation works; its commissioning is planned for 2018.
