The first train with fresh fuel for power unit No 1 under construction has arrived to Leningrad NPP

On 8 June, 2017, the first train with fresh fuel for VVER-1200 power unit No 1 under construction has arrived to Leningrad NPP (Sosnovy Bor). It was accepted by the operating LNPP facility for fuel handling.

“The Federal Service For Ecological, Technological and Nuclear Supervision of the Russian Federation (Rostekhnadzor) approved the change in conditions of Leningrad NPP license validity concerning nuclear materials handling. According to this document transport and storage containers with fresh fuel not only for operating power units, but also for new VVER-1200 power units will be delivered, stored and transported at the territory of operating Leningrad NPP”, the Plant Manager of LNPP Vladimir Pereguda said.

The main conditions for delivery of the fresh nuclear fuel at the construction site of replacement capacities are the road construction for its transportation to operating area of Leningrad NPP, launching the operating conditions in fresh nuclear fuel storage facility (NFSF), transfer of NPP under construction first power unit facilities for protection to the National Guard of the Russian Federation and obtaining the license for power unit operation.

“The construction of fresh nuclear fuel storage facilities is ready. Equipment and technological systems are on the final stage of commissioning. The specialists of commissioning organization prepare to put it into operation. NFSF is one of the most important facilities of a nuclear power plant. It is designed for operations related to acceptance of fresh fuel, its storage, inventory, control and preparation for fuel assemblies’ loading into reactor core”, Andrey Kolychev, the Head of Nuclear Safety and Reliability Department of Leningrad NPP under construction, said.

The Leningrad NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based in the city of Sosnovy Bor, 40 km to the west from Saint Petersburg at the Gulf of Finland shore. The Leningrad NPP is the first Russian nuclear power plant having RBMK-1000 reactors (uranium-graphite channel-type thermal neutron reactors). The NPP exploits 4 power blocks with the electric capacity of 1000 megawatt each. Also, pursuant to the NPP-2006 project, 1,2 VVER-1200 power blocks included into The State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM long-term plan are being constructed. Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC is the owner and developer of the project. Holding TITAN-2 is the primary contractor. ATOMPROEKT is the general designer.
