Rostov NPP: sportsmen from Vietnam took part in the plant’s annual Badminton Championship for the first time

The Third Open Badminton Tournament of Rostov NPP has been completed at Rostov NPP’s Sports and Recreation Centre. This year the competition has become international – apart from Rostov NPP employees, the Vietnamese students that have an internship at Volgodonsk Engineering and Technical Institute, a branch of National Research Nuclear University MEPhI (Moscow Engineering Physics Institute) have taken part in it.

In total more than 30 people participated the Tournament. There were 5 categories in the competition: men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles (man and woman play in pair).

Opening the Tournament, the Deputy HR Director Mikhail Ryabyshev noted that badminton develops valuable qualities for the nuclear experts – the ability to work in as a team, be ahead of the curve, and be responsible for the game result.

“Badminton is a very interesting and mobile sport; people of all ages can play it”, one of the competition organizators, the Lead Engineer on Reactor Control of Rostov NPP Aleksandr Kuzmin said. “Now the badminton club at Rostov NPP’s SRC is the only one in Volgodonsk. And ten years ago it started with the amateur games in the yard of the nuclear power plant.”
One of the Vietnamese participants of the competition Le Kong Tuan Wu also shared his impression, “At my homeland, Ho Chi Minh, badminton is a very popular sport. I have been going to the college’s club for several years and I am surprised by the high level of Russian sportsmen’s skills.”

But, despite the enormous popularity of badminton in Southeast Asia, as a result of matches between the Rostov NPP team and Vietnamese students, the team of Rostov nuclear power plant has won by a score of 7:4.

The Rostov NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based at the Tsymlianskoe reservoir shore 13.5 km away from Volgodonsk. The NPP operates VVER-1000 reactors with the installed capacity of 1000 megawatts. The power block No.1 commenced commercial operations in 2001, with the second and the third power blocks to follow in 2010 and on September 17, 2015, respectively. The power block No. 4 is currently under construction.
