Rostov NPP: the specialists of the starting power unit No 4 have begun the reactor assembly

The specialists of the Centralized Repair Shop (CRS) of Rostov NPP together with Sezam JSC contractors have started the assembly of the 4th power unit’s reactor.

Within 25 days all the internals (with a total weight of 150 tons) will be installed: an in-vessel core barrel, a baffle and a protective tube unit. And with the help of the refueling machine 163 fuel assembly imitators (FAI) will be loaded.

According to the Deputy Manager on Capital Projects Aleksey Fedotov, upon completion of the reactor assembly, Volgodonsk nuclear experts would proceed to the reactor unit testing, including the operational testing.

“We have already assembled the in-vessel core barrel, the works on the baffle assembly are in the process, and we will start the FAI loading in few days. We are planning to complete the works on the reactor assembly within this month. After the reactor assembly we will start its hydro-testing and circulation flushing in order to test the assembly quality of the first circuit once more”, Aleksey Fedotov noted.

After the hydro-testing and circulation flushing the technological stage of the reactor unit hot trial will start at the starting unit. The temperature conditions similar to the real operation of the nuclear reactor will be created. This will allow the specialists to take the equipment performances: heat input, heat loss, coolant rate, and other characteristics that prove the reactor safety and its compliance to the design specifications.

The power block No. 4 is planned to be launched in 2017.

The Rostov NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based at the Tsymlianskoe reservoir shore 13.5 km away from Volgodonsk. The NPP operates VVER-1000 reactors with the installed capacity of 1000 megawatts. The power block No.1 commenced commercial operations in 2001, with the second and the third power blocks to follow in 2010 and on September 17, 2015, respectively. The power block No. 4 is currently under construction.
