The specialists of Leningrad NPP have started testing the reactor building inner containment dome at power unit No 1 under construction

At Leningrad NPP’s power unit No 1 under construction the specialists have proceeded to one of the main stages of the commissioning works – the testing of the reactor building’s leak-tight enclosure system.

The leak-tight system is the confining safety system that consists of the inner and outer containment domes. While operating the double containment dome will eliminate the radioactive release to the environment, and will serve as a physical protection from external effects to the reactor building.

“Our task is to test the reactor building inner containment dome’s (ICD) safety and integrity, and to prove its serviceability. At the first stage we have performed the vacuum-pumping of the ICD, carried out its sound and visual control. Test loads have shown that there are no containment’s leakages or transmission. It is ready for the overpressure trials”, the Chief Engineer of Leningrad NPP Oleg Ivanov said.

During the second stage trials the compressed air will be delivered to the containment in order to create there the required pressure – negative and calculated. At each pressure stage the monitoring of the containment dome stress strain behavior will be carried out. In addition, the specialists will monitor the crack formation on the surface of concrete and pulling force of ICD prestressing strands.

“This will help to estimate how the condition of the inner containment dome corresponds to the design values, allow to define its safety margin. We must confirm that there are no permanent deformations of metal and concrete structure of the containment dome. After this it will be considered ready for operation”, the Chief of the Reactor Shop of Leningrad NPP under construction Vitaliy Shutikov explained.

The Leningrad NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based in the city of Sosnovy Bor, 40 km to the west from Saint Petersburg at the Gulf of Finland shore. The Leningrad NPP is the first Russian nuclear power plant having RBMK-1000 reactors (uranium-graphite channel-type thermal neutron reactors). The NPP exploits 4 power blocks with the electric capacity of 1000 megawatt each. Also, pursuant to the NPP-2006 project, 1,2 VVER-1200 power blocks included into The State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM long-term plan are being constructed. Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC is the owner and developer of the project. Holding TITAN-2 is the primary contractor. ATOMPROEKT is the general designer.
