35 students from Turkey have completed their training at Novovoronezh NPP

At Novovoronezh NPP 35 Turkish fifth-year students from Obninsk institute of MEPhI National Research Nuclear University (MEPhI NRNU) have completed their work experience internship.

The two-week training consisted of theory and practice where the interns have learnt about leading Russian technologies and solutions in the area of nuclear power industry implemented by Novovoronezh NPP. The subjects of the studies included nuclear reactor operation principles, main control systems of NPP, and modern safety technologies.

In particular, Turkish students have learnt technological characteristics of the latest and most powerful Russian power unit No 1 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 (the power unit No 6 of NV NPP) – the world’s first power unit of 3+ generation with VVER-1200 reactor that has been put into industrial operation on 27 February, 2017 and corresponds to all post-Fukushima requirements.

The internship has been conducted as a part of the Agreement between MEPhI NRNU and Rosenergoatom Concern on arrangement of foreign students’ internship at operating power plants of Russia.

According to the Head of the International Relations and Economic Cooperation Department Sergey Nistratov, the students would be able to apply the received knowledge for active development of nuclear power industry in Turkey or other countries.

It is to be recalled that in May, 2010 Russia and Turkey concluded the Agreement on the construction of Akkuyu NPP at the South shore of Turkey. This is a long-term project of a nuclear power plant on the basis of Novovoronezh NPP-2 project. It foresees 4 power units with the capacity of 1200 MW each. The working lifespan of Akkuyu NPP is 60 years.

The Novovoronezh nuclear power plant is a branch of the JSC "Concern Rosenergoatom". The station is located on the bank of the Don River in 42 km to the south of Voronezh. It is the Russia's first nuclear power plant with VVER reactors (water-to-water power reactors of case type with regular water under pressure). Each of five reactors of the station can be a main one – a prototype of serial power reactors: the power unit No. 1 with the VVER-210 reactor, the power unit No. 2 with the VVER-365 reactor, the No. 3, 4 power units with the VVER-440 reactors, the power unit No. 5 with the VVER-1000 reactor. The first power unit was launched in 1964, the second – in 1969, third – in 1971, fourth – 1972, fifth – 1980. There are three power units (power units No.1, 2 were stopped in 1984 and 1990 respectively) in work at the moment.

The power units Nos 1 and 2 were stopped in 1984 and 1990, respectively. The power unit No 3 was stopped in 2016 for decommissioning activities. The power unit No 1 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 was commissioned on 27 February, 2017. The power unit No 2 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 is in the middle of construction and installation works; its commissioning is planned for 2018.
