The repeat WANO Peer Review has started at Balakovo NPP

The repeat Peer Review of the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) has started at Balakovo NPP. Within a week a team consisting of Russian experts is going to evaluate the performance of remedial actions implemented at Balakovo NPP based on the results of the Peer Review in 2015.

Greeting the WANO experts the Chief Engineer of Balakovo NPP Oleg Romanenko has emphasized the importance of peer reviews for finding ways of improvement in nuclear plants performance. He has reported that in two years passed from the last Peer Review the plant had done a great work in implementing the recommendations of the expert team. He has noted the most significant events of recent years, namely the license on prolongation of power unit No 1 operation for additional 30 years received in December, 2015. This year task is to obtain the license on prolongation of power unit No 2 operation.

The Head of the Peer Reviews Program (PRP) of the WANO Moscow Centre Anatoliy Zinchenko – the head of the expert team – has informed that from now on the reviews will take place every two years (alternating from the main reviews to the repeat ones) on every nuclear power plant in the association.

“Within the repeat Peer Review at Balakovo NPP the experts work by the same procedure as at the main PRP”, Anatoliy Zinchenko noted. “They monitor, interview the personnel, and work with the documents. But this time the best practices and areas for improvement aren’t defined – the WANO representatives evaluate by four point grading scale how the recommendations of the previous team are implemented.”

Also, during the Peer Review the efficiency of WANO’s technical support mission on the topic “Organization and functioning of systems engineering in NPP’s engineer support service” that took place from February to March 2016 at Balakovo NPP. The expert team will complete their work on 19 May.
