The specialists of Leningrad NPP assembled a new system of vibration monitoring of turbine generators

The latest system of vibration load control and turbine generator monitoring was assembled at power units No 3 and 4 of Phase II of Leningrad NPP. This new system is intended to increase the reliability of the turbine generators and the level of power unit safety.

Unlike COMPASS system from Bruel & Kj?r – its Danish predecessor – the system is entirely home-produced, including its software. It is created by a member of Sarov innovation cluster, a small research and production enterprise Izmeritelnye tekhnologii Ltd founded on the modern element base. Its performance is higher, measurements are more accurate. And the most important part is that according to the technical requirements it has vibration threshold exceeding protection that automatically stops the turbine generator.

“We were working in close alliance with the contractors; together we supervised the assembly, commissioning and start-up. We literally felt every screw, every wire of the system. It is in trial operation now, running in parallel with the COMPASS system. Because – as it is necessary in our business – we follow a conservative approach of first developing new systems, accumulating an operating experience and only then completely trusting it”, Vitaliy Ponyakin, the programmer of SKALA-micro information-measuring system, said.

“The filling software of our computer equipment is constantly updated; microprocessors become more powerful, motherboards become smaller and more productive. Now our task is to carry out the verification, simply put, to compare the two systems for their information delivery speed, information amount and so on”, Dmitriy Dubov, a leading engineer of SKALA-2 section, explained.

“The new system consists of great capabilities of equipment diagnostics. It’s of higher level in comparison to COMPASS. Therefore, the repairs forecasting and planning become more accurate, their timing can be reduced; even before the power unit is stopped for repair, we know where to go and what to do”, Igor Il’yinskiy, the Chief Supervisor of the Instrument Section of the Thermal Measurements and Automation Department, said.

The Deputy Head of the Thermal Measurements and Automation Department Evgeniy Borisov praised the role of the team in the power unit safety improvement. “The team of the TMA Department is a creative fusion of young and experienced workers. They are capable of everything from performing the fitting and installation work to maintaining the programming and computing systems.”

The Leningrad NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based in the city of Sosnovy Bor, 40 km to the west from Saint Petersburg at the Gulf of Finland shore. The Leningrad NPP is the first Russian nuclear power plant having RBMK-1000 reactors (uranium-graphite channel-type thermal neutron reactors). The NPP exploits 4 power blocks with the electric capacity of 1000 megawatt each. Also, pursuant to the NPP-2006 project, 1,2 VVER-1200 power blocks included into The State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM long-term plan are being constructed. Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC is the owner and developer of the project. Holding TITAN-2 is the primary contractor. ATOMPROEKT is the general designer.
