The process of the Leningrad NPP’s 1st power block reactor buildings’ containment strand tensioning has started
The preliminary tensioning of the reactor building’s internal containment consisting of horizontal and vertical strands “hugging” the dome and the cylindrical parts of the containment as a net has been initiated at the Leningrad NPP’s 1st power block.
In order to transport and to deploy the necessary equipment, the process-oriented openings were extended, the working platforms were installed, the rigging was prepared and verified, and the lighting system was finalized. The staff has also installed hydraulic rams that were designed and manufactured especially for the reactor’s containment pre-tensioning system installation
“We use hydraulic rams to tension by turns 126 ring and vertical strands at two sides in parallel. The tension force is fixed at the anchor heads transferring load onto concrete and can be adjusted if necessary”, said Alexey Mochalov, the deputy head of the reactor assembling workshop at the Leningrad NPP under construction.
Vitaliy Shutikov, the head of the Leningrad NPP’s reactor workshop, said: “The strand tensioning activities are very time-consuming and require multiple movements of a screw jack. However, the output is worth the efforts: the net-like position of strands fosters even closure of the containment, which is a localizing security system of the NPP that makes the reactor building leak-proof under any operational modes, including the emergency one”.
He also noted that the containment will have an automated control system to monitor its status under trials and operations. The strands can be tightened or substituted if necessary.
The Leningrad NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based in the city of Sosnovy Bor, 40 km to the west from Saint Petersburg at the Gulf of Finland shore. The Leningrad NPP is the first Russian nuclear power plant having RBMK-1000 reactors (uranium-graphite channel-type thermal neutron reactors). The NPP exploits 4 power blocks with the electric capacity of 1000 megawatt each. Also, pursuant to the NPP-2006 project, 1,2 VVER-1200 power blocks included into The State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM long-term plan are being constructed. Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC is the owner and developer of the project. Holding TITAN-2 is the primary contractor. ATOMPROEKT is the general designer.
