The delegation from the Czech Republic has reviewed the Rosatom’s proposal on the new Leningrad NPP’s power blocks construction

A large group of guests headed by Karel Kinl, the consul general of the Czech Republic in Saint Petersburg, and Jan Stuller, the Czech Government’ commissioner on the nuclear power industry, has paid a visit to the Leningrad NPP’s substitution capacity construction site.

At the beginning of the meeting, the delegation had a lecture on the main technological peculiarities of the Leningrad NPP under construction. Afterwards, they visited the site itself to review the progress of the new VVER-1200 power blocks construction.

“The aim of this trip for us was to better understand the new-generation VVER power blocks’ technical stack. Nuclear power industry is a part of our country development plan. According to the governmental schedule, the new power blocks are to be constructed. The Dukovany NPP power blocks have been running for over 30 years, so in 15-20 years they will be shut down. To substitute them, we will require new power blocks, which is why we are now looking at ten proposals from our potential vendors, Rosatom being one of them”, Jan Stuller said.

The main point of interest for the Czech delegation were the additional security systems that have been used at the new Leningrad NPP’s power block for the first time in such a configuration. As of now, this security system combining active and passive elements draws attention of the nuclear power experts from all over the world. Besides, it makes the Leningrad NPP’s substitution capabilities exceed the up-to-date international security standards set for the nuclear power plants constructed after the Fukushima accident.

“I really liked the way the new Leningrad NPP’s power blocks are being constructed. We represent the working group of the international commission for nuclear power cooperation between Russia and the Czech Republic, and today we were demonstrated everything we were interested int. I’m sure our countries have enormous potential for further mutually beneficial cooperation that has been going on for over 60 years”, Karel Kinl shared his impressions
The new electric power generation sources are to be constructed in the Czech Republic by 2035, that is, by the time the first Dukovany NPP’s power blocks with the capacity of 2000 megawatts are to be shut down.

The Leningrad NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based in the city of Sosnovy Bor, 40 km to the west from Saint Petersburg at the Gulf of Finland shore. The Leningrad NPP is the first Russian nuclear power plant having RBMK-1000 reactors (uranium-graphite channel-type thermal neutron reactors). The NPP exploits 4 power blocks with the electric capacity of 1000 megawatt each. Also, pursuant to the NPP-2006 project, 1,2 VVER-1200 power blocks included into The State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM long-term plan are being constructed. Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC is the owner and developer of the project. Holding TITAN-2 is the primary contractor. ATOMPROEKT is the general designer.
