The WANO experts have recognized the best practices in abiding to operational procedures at Novovoronezh NPP

The World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) mission on the subject of “Equipment and means of operation” has been completed at Novovoronezh NPP.

Within a week from 17 to 21 April, 2017, the WANO experts from Russia, the Czech Republic and Ukraine shared their experience with the Novovoronezh nuclear experts in housekeeping (abiding to the operational procedures) at the fourth and fifth power units of Novovoronezh NPP.

The experts have visited the reactor and the turbine departments of power units No 4 and 5, held interviews with their chiefs, and made presentations about the best world practices of housekeeping at nuclear power plants.

“We have on our own requested the WANO to hold a technical support mission on the subject of “Equipment and means of operation” at Novovoronezh NPP having thought that this subject has a potential for improvement”, the Deputy Chief Engineer on Phase II operation Andrey Meremianin said. He told that there was a lot of useful information in WANO experts’ materials on world’s best practices of abiding to the operational procedures.

The WANO representative at Leningrad NPP Igor Goncharov noted the openness of the Novovoronezh partners during the mission. He also told that above all things he was impressed by the 5th power unit of Novovoronezh NPP, as well as the work organization in the electrical shop, “I picked an interest in keeping the list of cards with the electric shop personnel activity on the mobile equipment operation. These cards contain the notes where you can at once see the sequencing of actions to reveal and exclude errors.”

“The OSART mission that was held by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in 2015 at Novovoronezh NPP has had a positive impact at the 5th power unit. It is at the high level operation. Leningrad NPP is going to hold the OSART mission, that is why I will definitely take into account the experience I’ve received at Novovoronezh NPP”, the expert added.

According to Novovoronezh NPP Chief of the International and Foreign Economic Cooperation Department Sergey Nistratov, in 2017 the nuclear power plant is going to hold another 2 technical support missions of the WANO on the following subjects: “Root causes determination and effective remedial action development” and “Non-admission of foreign objects into the decompressed equipment”.

The Novovoronezh nuclear power plant is a branch of the JSC "Concern Rosenergoatom". The station is located on the bank of the Don River in 42 km to the south of Voronezh. It is the Russia's first nuclear power plant with VVER reactors (water-to-water power reactors of case type with regular water under pressure). Each of five reactors of the station can be a main one – a prototype of serial power reactors: the power unit No. 1 with the VVER-210 reactor, the power unit No. 2 with the VVER-365 reactor, the No. 3, 4 power units with the VVER-440 reactors, the power unit No. 5 with the VVER-1000 reactor. The first power unit was launched in 1964, the second – in 1969, third – in 1971, fourth – 1972, fifth – 1980. There are three power units (power units No.1, 2 were stopped in 1984 and 1990 respectively) in work at the moment.

The power units Nos 1 and 2 were stopped in 1984 and 1990, respectively. The power unit No 3 was stopped in 2016 for decommissioning activities. The power unit No 1 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 was commissioned on 27 February, 2017. The power unit No 2 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 is in the middle of construction and installation works; its commissioning is planned for 2018.
