The Rusatom Service – The Rosenergoatom Concern – EDF consortium has completed its work on justifying an opportunity of extending the lifespan of the Kozloduy NPP’s 5th power block
On October 25, 2015, an event dedicated to completing the joint contract activities of the Kozloduy NPP – The Rusatom Service – The Rosenergoatom Concern – EDF was held at the Kozloduy NPP. The aim of the consortium, was to justify an opportunity of extending the lifespan of the Kozloduy NPP’s 5th power block.
Several people took part in the event, including Temenuzhka Petkova, the Bulgarian Minister of Energy, Kirill Komarov, the First deputy CEO and the head of the Rosatom’s Development and international business department, the representatives of the Kozloduy NPP, the Bulgarian energy holding, the Bulgarian nuclear regulation agency, and the major organizations involved in the project, such as the Rusatom Service, the Rosenergoatom Concern, Electricite de France, AO Atomtekhenergo, OKB Gidropress, Risk Engineering, etc.
During the meeting, the consortium has submitted the final project report, the record of which was signed by the Kozloduy NPP’s Executive Director Ivan Andreev and the Rusatom Service’s CEO Salkov Evgeny.
The Rosenergoatom Concern has established a working group on managing the Kozloduy’s NPP 5th power block life extension, which was responsible for technical management of the equipment exploration survey methodology, issuing expert resolutions upon the review, quality control of the works completed within the project in accordance with the quality assurance program. Besides, the group was involved in developing the quality assurance program, the project management guide, and the project organization plan.
The outcomes of the project researches have demonstrated that the equipment, the building constructions and systems are operational and, taking into account the incumbent maintenance and repair system, those can run safely until 2047 on condition that the resource parameters management activities are organized properly.
“This project is crucial for us because we do understand the contribution of the Kozloduy NPP’s running power blocks in the Bulgarian economy, and we are happy to make our own one into the country’s energy safety”, Kirill Komarov noted.
“Thanks to the great cooperation between the Kozloduy NPP and the consortium of AO Rusatom Service – The Rosenergoatom Concern - Electricite de France, the Bulgarian government can successfully pursue one of its priorities in the energy industry, specifically – the life span extension of the NPP’s 5th and 6th power blocks. Keeping the Kozloduy NPP’s capabilities will serve as a guarantee of a stable energy system in Bulgaria”, Minister Petkova said.
The contract between the Kozloduy NPP (Bulgaria) and The Rusatom Service – The Rosenergoatom Concern - Electricite de France consortium regulating the justification of the Kozloduy NPP’s 5th power block life extension up to 60 years was signed on September 29, 2014. The contract is valid for 27 months.
The Rusatom Service is a part of the Rosatom State Corporation’s electric power division. The company delivers a full range of services for foreign VVER-powered nuclear power plants to facilitate their operation and maintenance. The company is present almost in all countries operating VVER power blocks outside Russia.
The Rosenergoatom Concern (the energy division of the Rosatom State Corporation) includes all 10 Russian nuclear power plants that bear a status of the Concern’s affiliate companies, along with the companies facilitating the operations of the generating company. All in all, the 10 NPPs run 34 power blocks (excluding the Beloyarsk NPP’s 4th power block (BN-800) being prepared for commercial operation pre-commissioning and the Novovoronezh NPP’s 6th power block going through the trial run): 18 of them run VVER reactors (12 power blocks with VVER-1000 and 6 blocks with VVER-440 reactors of different modifications); 15 of them operate channel-type reactors (11 power blocks with RBMK-1000 ones and four power blocks with EGP-6 reactors); 1 power block running on fast neutrons with sodium cooling (BN-600). The total designed capacity of all power blocks is 26.24 GW. Currently, the Rosenergoatom Concern’s NPPs account for around 18.6% of all electric power output in Russia.
