The Kalinin NPP: the Hungarian nuclear specialists are studying their Russian counterparts’ best practices in the realm of full-scale NPP simulators

The representatives of the Hungarian Energy research center - the head of the reactor control systems and simulator development department and the scientific advisor Gabor Hazi and the head of the department’s simulator development group Josef Palets – have paid a visit to the Kalinin NPP’s training center.

The Hungarian specialists are involved in the Paksh NPP’s 1st power block modernization, including the update of its simulator. Nowadays, having a park of simulators is a must for any modern high-technology production enterprise.

The goal of the visit was to review the full-scale simulator of the Kalinin NPP’s 4th power block and the local NPP simulators, as well as to learn more about the simulator development methods.

According to Alexander Molev, the deputy head of the VNIIAES Department, the Kalinin NPP’s full-scale simulator is second-to-none in its realm. For example, the Kalinin NPP is the only one that can boast a reserve control box, which is a unique technology from the modernization point of view. Currently, a reserve control box can be used as a full-scale simulator for the NPP blocks that are yet to be updated.

“We were highly impressed by the Kalinin NPP’s simulators. I’m sure that the joint Russian-Hungarian project on the Paksh NPP simulator reconstruction will be efficient”, said Gabor Hazi, the head of the reactor control systems and simulator development department at the Energy research center (Hungary).

The full-scale simulator of the 4th power block was designed and developed by VNIIAES to train the NPP’s operational staff having access to the running block and to keep their qualifications up. This simulator reproduces the full range of modes stipulated in the Rosenergoatom Concern’s standards, starting with the normal operation mode and up to non-designed emergencies.

The Kalininskaya nuclear power plant is a branch of the JSC "Concern Rosenergoatom". The station is located in the north of the Tver region in the Udomelskiy area. There are four power units with water-cooled power reactors (VVER-1000) with installed capacity of 1000 MW each in the structure of the Kalininskaya nuclear power station.
