The Arab Republic of Egypt parliamentarians have visited LNPP construction site for the first time

The representatives of the Arab Republic of Egypt Parliament have come with a reference visit to the site of Leningrad NPP under construction for the first time. The foreign delegation consisted of members of the Energy Committee and 15 country’s deputies-legislators.

“Now we are standing on the verge of construction the new NPP in partnership with Russian specialists that will become the next large scale engineering building after the Aswan Dam and HPP”, the Chief Delegate, the Chairman of the Energy Committee of the Egypt Parliament Talaat el-Sewedy emphasized in the beginning of the visit. “We sincerely thank Rosatom for the high organization level of the visit, openness and traditional hospitality.”

The guests were presented with the detailed presentation of all the stages of construction and new industrial methods of construction that were first applied during the construction of two new power units of Leningrad NPP. However, the interest for the project was much deeper, than it was foreseen by this format, and Egyptian party has asked a lot of additional questions regarding VVER-1200 reactor power unit life, active and passive safety systems, types of nuclear fuel used, and ways of its recycling that would guarantee its safety for population and ecology. Additionally, the deputies were interested in other prospects that would occur after the construction of four power units of the first Egypt NPP, alongside the electric power and thermal energy generation.

Leningrad NPP power units under construction are referential, and they are the models for those units that will be placed on the Mediterranean Sea shore, near El Dabaa. The importance of this project is also emphasized by the fact that this is not only about the first nuclear power plant in the country, but also the whole range of measures, including personnel training and science development that will allow to create new nuclear industry in Egypt. “We will build these power units together with Russian specialists, that is why the main target of our visit is to look by ourselves and communicate to our people that the future NPP will be safe for them and efficient for economy”, Talaat el-Sewedy told his plans. “And we hope that Rosatom specialists will repeat their remarkable project of Leningrad NPP construction in our country as well.”

The Leningrad NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based in the city of Sosnovy Bor, 40 km to the west from Saint Petersburg at the Gulf of Finland shore. The Leningrad NPP is the first Russian nuclear power plant having RBMK-1000 reactors (uranium-graphite channel-type thermal neutron reactors). The NPP exploits 4 power blocks with the electric capacity of 1000 megawatt each. Also, pursuant to the NPP-2006 project, 1,2 VVER-1200 power blocks included into The State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM long-term plan are being constructed. Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC is the owner and developer of the project. Holding TITAN-2 is the primary contractor. ATOMPROEKT is the general designer.
