Smolensk NPP prepares for WANO peer review in this October

The advanced visit of the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) expert team to Smolensk NPP has ended on 16 February, 2017. It had been carried out under the peer review preparation taking place this October.

As the head of the team Lubomir Krenicki (Slovakia) has noted, the advanced visit is a standard part of a peer review. “The main aim is to coordinate work conditions of a big team that will arrive this autumn and to conduct the advanced supervision in order to get the first impression of the nuclear plant”, he noted. “We achieved the aims we’d established.”

During the visit the international partners have executed the walkdown of power units and outdoor facilities of the nuclear plant, made observations of the operation and repair processes, operators’ training on full-scale simulator of the main control room, discussed the organizational issues concerning the preparation to the peer review.


It is to be recalled that the WANO peer review will take place at Smolensk NPP from 5 to 20 of October under the following directions: operation, technical support and repairs, engineering support, radiological protection and safety, chemistry, personnel training, priority operational aims, work management, equipment reliability, configurational control, operation improvement, operational experience, organizational effectiveness, fire protection, emergency readiness. On top of that, the reviewing team experts will observe essential production tasks: professionalism and leadership.

The WANO mission is to improve safety and reliability of NPPs in the whole world to the maximum level, exerting joint efforts to assess, compare with the best achievements and improve the operation by means of mutual support, information exchange and positive experience usage.

Smolensk NPP prepares thoroughly to an international “exam”. They have formed the working groups on every direction, developed and implemented the events on the operation processes improvement and the operation safety enhancement.

The Smolensk nuclear power plant is a branch of the JSC "Concern Rosenergoatom". The SNPP annually issues on the average about 20 billion kilowatts hours of the electric power into country power supply system, that constitutes about 13% of the energy, developed in «Rosenergoatom Concern», and more than 80% of the Smolensk region energy, developed by the power entities.
