Smolensk NPP prepares for WANO Peer Review

Smolensk NPP has made a favourable impression, and the personnel have shown the proper work methods. Such opinion was)expressed by the World Association of Nuclear Operators Moscow Centre (WANO MC) expert Dmitriy Chichikin.
From 9 to 14 April 2017 the experts assessed the plant by its Repair Works and Operation Management within Smolensk NPP’s preparation for the Peer Review this October.

WANO MC representatives arrived to the plant with the repeat visit within the scheduled preventive repair works of the 1st power unit in order to get a true and full picture in areas of estimation.

They visited the repair sites in the turbine and the reactor rooms, observed the works important for nuclear plant safety – including electrics and automatics.

“Within the Review we have worked by WANO standards that represent the collection of the best world practices in nuclear power industry; that is why our conclusions and proposals are made in accordance with these standards”, Dmitriy Chichikin told. “This is the mission of WANO – to define in which areas nuclear power shows growth, and in which there are possibilities of improvement, as our mutual goal is to increase the nuclear safety and reliability of power units.”

According to the expert, Smolensk NPP is opened for a meaningful dialogue with international partners; this shows that the forthcoming Peer Review will be a useful tool for the development of both the plant and the WANO Moscow Centre. The key to success of the Peer Review is each worker’s realization of responsibility and understanding that they work  at the serious manufacture.

“It’s my first visit to Smolensk NPP, and to the plant with RBMK reactors (High Power Channel-type Reactor), I was pleasingly surprised with the nuclear plant’s condition, excellent personnel; I wish for the plant’s further development in this direction”, the Head of Preparation and Repair Works Department of South Ukraine NPP Aleksandr Maslyakov expressed his impression after the visit.

WANO Peer Review will be held at Smolensk NPP from 5 to 20 October 2017 in the following areas: operation, technical maintenance and repair, engineering facilities, radiation protection and safety, chemistry, personnel training, top-priority operational tasks, operations management, equipment reliability, configuration control, operational procedures development, operation experience, organizational structure efficience, fire protection, and emergency readiness. In addition, the Peer Review expert team will handle fundamental production problems: professionalism and leadership.
