Rostov NPP: Mounting of Containment Dome of Unit 3 Reactor Compartment

October 29, 2012 – Lifting and mounting of the containment dome of Unit 3 reactor compartment was performed at the building site of Rostov NPP. This important operation was carried out by specialists of Volgodonsk branch of ROSSEM trust.

The second tier of the containment dome weighing 165 tons and 37 meters in diameter was assembled on the ground and lifted on the containment with one of Europe’ largest cranes KROLL. This unique technique is able to lift a load of up to 240 tons. There are only 15 such cranes in the world, and one of them is operating at the building site of Rostov NPP Unit 3.
Lifting of the containment dome to its regular place took about one hour. Andrey Salnikov, Director of Rostov NPP, Alexander Khazin, Director of Volgodonsk branch of JSC NIAEP–CJSC ASE (general contractor of Rostov NPP construction), and heads of subcontracting organizations watched the progress of operation at the site from the beginning to the end.

Chief Engineer of Volgodonsk branch of ROSSEM trust, Alexander Masalykin, supervising the works on lifting and mounting of the containment dome, said: “This operation brings the finish line under the general construction works. In the containment and area inside it, there were installed about 7000 tons of metalwork.”

Alexander Khazin, Director of Volgodonsk branch of JSC NIAEP–CJSC ASE, said that the operation started the next stage – the organization of the normally occupied area inside the containment and beginning of installation of the main equipment: steam generators, reactor vessel and main circulation piping. He also added that some days before there had happened another significant event at Unit 3 under construction – the voltage supply to the auxiliaries.

Next control point of this year – flooring of the auxiliary building of the reactor containment of Unit 3 at level 45. Completion of these works is scheduled for the end of 2012.

Rostov NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The enterprise is situated on the bank of Tsimlyansk Reservoir at 13,5 km from Volgodonsk. NPP operates two power units with VVER-1000 reactors with the installed capacity of 1,000 MW. Unit 1 was commissioned in 2001 and Unit 2 – in December 2010. Power Units 3 and 4 are under construction.
