Novovoronezh NPP: the Belarusian nuclear power workers adopt their Russian colleaguesХ experience with the Kaskad system

Belarusian specialists visited Novovoronezh NPP (a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern) to study the practice of performing calculations in the Kaskad software used to determine the neutronic characteristics of the VVER nuclear reactors fuel loading.

ТIt is numbers, coefficients and limits received from Kaskad code that helps the operational personnel to manage the reactorУ, the Head of the Nuclear Physics Laboratory of Belarusian NPP Levon Avetisyan said. ТThe project of our plant Р as well as the Novovoronezh ones Р involves Kaskad neutronic calculations. Even before the Belarusian NPP launch operations we must teach our staff to work with this softwareУ, the engineer explained. He also noted that Novovoronezh nuclear power plant has gained a good educational practice and a wide experience in this subject.

ТI'm just very excited about the experience I got at Novovoronezh NPPУ, the engineer of Nuclear Physics Laboratory of Belarusian NPP Yulia Zinkevych shared her impressions. ТBefore, weХve studied the theory of neutronic calculations at the Kurchatov Institute and the Obninsk Institute of Atomic Energy, and now weХre finally able to practice conducting such calculations. And no doubt that is exciting.У

Belarusian NPP is being constructed in Astrovets District of Grodno Oblast under an innovative project with 3+ generation VVER-1200 reactors. This exact project is used for power unit construction in Leningrad and Novovoronezh NPPs. And this is the reason why our Belarusian colleagues often visit Novovoronezh for experience exchange.

The visit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant workers to study the practice of neutronic calculations with Kaskad software was held in the framework of the Т2015 -2017 Rosatom Action Plan to Create the Nuclear Energy Infrastructure in the Republic of BelarusУ. This plan includes seminars, meetings, and technical tours for the Belarusian specialists at Russian nuclear power plants with VVER-1200 reactors, etc.

During the technical visits to Russian NPPs and nuclear companies, the Belarusian specialists observe the procedure of commissioning works at the plant, putting into operation the full-scale simulators and their operation, assessment the experience of test facility operation and fuel assemblies repair, FA simulators handling technology, and environment control management, etc.

The Novovoronezh nuclear power plant is a branch of the JSC "Concern Rosenergoatom". The station is located on the bank of the Don River in 42 km to the south of Voronezh. It is the Russia's first nuclear power plant with VVER reactors (water-to-water power reactors of case type with regular water under pressure). Each of five reactors of the station can be a main one Р a prototype of serial power reactors: the power unit No. 1 with the VVER-210 reactor, the power unit No. 2 with the VVER-365 reactor, the No. 3, 4 power units with the VVER-440 reactors, the power unit No. 5 with the VVER-1000 reactor. The first power unit was launched in 1964, the second Р in 1969, third Р in 1971, fourth Р 1972, fifth Р 1980. There are three power units (power units No.1, 2 were stopped in 1984 and 1990 respectively) in work at the moment.

Since 2007, the innovative 6th and 7th power blocks with the capacity of 1200 megawatts each have been constructed at the Novovoronezh NPPХs site. The 7th power block is currently undergoing construction and assembly activities and is planned to be completed in 2018.
