Kola NPP: New Levels of Occupational Safety

An inspection audit of the occupational health and safety management system for the compliance with the requirements of the international standard OHSAS* 18001:2007 has been finished at Kola NPP.

The audit was conducted by experts of the Certification Association Russian Register and CJSC Klinsk Institute for Occupational Health and Safety OLC-Komplekt.

During the audit, experts, led by Yuri Fefelov, learned the functioning of the occupational health and safety management system in details at the plantХs subdivisions, interviewed managers and specialists of the enterprise, made an expert examination of the production and technical documentation and confirmed its compliance with the requirements of the international standard OHSAS 18001:2007.

By the results of the work at the plant, the auditors noted effectiveness of the work of specialists of Kola NPP OHS Department, which continuously worked on prevention of occupational injuries, diseases and carried out practical measures to improve working conditions.  

As a whole, the expert team came to a conclusion that OHS management system functioned and developed at Kola NPP in compliance with the principles of OHSAS 18001:2007. Modern technologies are implemented at the enterprise, and optimal conditions for the safe work are created.

Occupational Health and Safety Policy, based on the principles of the international standard, has been introduced at Kola NPP since June 1 of the current year. Creation of the occupational health and safety system on the basis of the national and international standards makes it possible to obtain an effective tool and basis for reducing accident risks that increase the general effectiveness of the work.

As a result of the certification audit, held at the enterprise in September, 2012, the management of the Certification Association Russian Register made a decision to issue a certificate of compliance. In the nearest future, the document will be handed to Director of Kola NPP, Vasily Omelchuk. OHSAS 18001 certificate demonstrates that the enterprise strictly monitors the factors of production and occupational hazards and is concerned about its personnelХs safety at workplaces.

Kola NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is located 200 km to the south of Murmansk on the bank of Lake Imandra. It produces about 60% of electricity of Murmansk region. Currently, the plant operates 4 power units with VVER-type reactors. Each reactor has capacity of 440 MW. Kola NPP supplies power for Murmansk region and Karelia.
