Foster Children of Lopukhinsky Orphanage Visit Leningrad NPP

On December 13, 2012, foster children of Lopukhinsky orphanage made an inception visit to Leningrad NPP.

The group of visitors included twelve boys and four girls at the age of 13-16 years old, as well as teachers and leadership of the orphanage. ТWe responded to the invitation of LNPP Director, Vladimir Ivanovich Pereguda, to visit the nuclear power plant enthusiastically,У said Vice-Principal of the orphanage, Svetlana Vasilyevna Afanasyeva. ТUnderstanding the specifics of the nuclear facility, we whipped the middle and high school students interested in physics and mathematics.У

To make it more understandable, specialists of the Public Information Centre showed a video-tour film to the children about the operation of the nuclear power plant. While watching the film, the school students, following the narrator, passed through the main shops of LNPP, learned the principle of operation of the plant, viewed the process of refueling, Тpeeked inУ the cooling pond, where spent fuel assemblies have been kept and, certainly, viewed Cherenkov radiation.

Then the students got acquainted with the work of the full-scale simulator of the main control room Р a replica of the real main control room of the nuclear power plant, which trains specialists-operators of MCR. The tour time just coincided with the training, and the trained Р leading engineers for the reactor, power unit and turbine control - with great pleasure told to the children about the peculiarities of their work.

In order to demonstrate the operation of the automatic equipment of the full-scale simulator of MCR, the most active high school students were entrusted to operate the control systems: the children tried to make a quick controlled power reduction of the reactor Р they switched the main circulation pump off and traced the subsequent automatic power reduction on the devices.

The school students shared their impressions from the tour. Maxim Beltsev, 10th grade student, said: ТI have been fascinated by the equipment since childhood, and I like physics very much. And here I had a unique opportunity Р to visit NPP! I was very much impressed! Especially, the opportunity to try to switch the pump off by myself impressed me most of all. I think that after the 11th grade I will choose to enter a technical university. I will think about applying for the nuclear specialtyЙУ

Peter Terekhin, student of the 9th grade, said: ТI was very impressed by the full-scale simulator! ItХs a pity that I hadnХt an opportunity to press any button, but I viewed the whole process. I am convinced that to control the nuclear power plant is a serious work, and LNPP is a big and complex system.У

At the end of the tour, the guys received gifts from Leningrad NPP.
