Businessmen and Nuclear Scientists from Republic of Turkey Visit Novovoronezh NPP

Businessmen and nuclear scientists from the Republic of Turkey paid an inception visit to Novovoronezh nuclear power plant on October 5, 2012.

ТCitizens of Turkey have little information on safety of nuclear power. A visit of leaders of the social movement to Novovoronezh NPP - scientists, business representatives Р will help fill this gap,У Tahir Agayev, a representative of JSC Akkuyu NPP, explained one of the objectives of the visit.

And Spokesman of the delegation of the social and business circles of the Republic of Turkey, Mehmet Ulugturkan, noted: ТBuilders are impatiently looking forward to laying the capsule on the place of the future Akkuyu NPP, and thus, there will be started a construction of the first in our country nuclear power plant.У

The delegation included representatives of the large business of Turkey: the Association of Young Businessmen of Adana (AGIAD) Р one of the largest industrial centres in the region, where the construction of Akkuyu NPP is planned, and nuclear scientists of Istanbul Technical University (ITU).

For the foreign guests, there was organized a tour on the traditional route: at the operating nuclear power plant they visited the turbine island, main control units of Units 3, 4 and 5, after that they viewed the construction progress of NPP II. The representatives of the large business got interested particularly in the construction of NV NPP II Р the similar plant with VVER-1200 type reactors will be built in Turkey.

The guests visited the operating plant in one of the ТhotУ periods - during the scheduled outage of Unit 4. Thus, in the turbine island they observed the work on midlife repair of Turbine Generator 12.
At the nuclear power plant, the representatives of the large business also were interested in the issues related to the safe operation, ecology and health of the staff. Answering the question about the safety of the nuclear power plant, Yevgeny Ivanovich noted that for all 48 years of operation, NV NPP has never had emergency situations above the ТzeroУ level according to the international nuclear event scale (INES).

At the construction site of Novovoronezh II, the businessmen from Turkey got acquainted with the work progress on mounting of the dome portion, reactor vessel in the containment area of Unit 1. Here they had an opportunity to evaluate the modern technologies of construction and their own abilities to participate in the project of NPP Akkuyu.

Sharing his opinion from the visit, the delegation head and AGIAD Chairman, Tamer Gulcan, noted: ТBefore the arrival here, our knowledge on the reactor appearance and its construction was very limited.  Here we have seen everything with our own eyes. And I may tell that technologically the plant under construction is equipped excellently, and the quality of the construction works performed here is at the highest level.У In his turn, Professor of Istanbul Technical University, an Engineer in nuclear technology, Ahmet Durmayaz, noted the high level of the active and passive safety systems of the constructed NV NPP II.

This is already the second in this year visit of representatives of the Republic of Turkey to Novovoronezh. Looking back, in the end of May, one of the oldest nuclear power plants of the world was visited by the representatives of the Ministries of the Republic of Turkey, who, according to their own words, admired the high level of the physical protection of the plant and low prime cost of the electricity generated.

The agreement to build the nuclear power plant Akkuyu was signed between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Republic of Turkey in Ankara on May 12, 2010. The place of construction is the Mediterranean coast, in the province of Mersin. The project provides 4 power units with capacity of 1,200 MW each. It is planned that after the construction of NPP, Akkuyu will generate about 35 billion kWh per year. Akkuyu NPP is a serial project of the nuclear power plant NPP-2006 based on the project Novovoronezh II (Russia, the Voronezh region). The lifecycle of Akkuyu will be 60 years.

Novovoronezh NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is situated on the bank of the Don river at 42 km south of Voronezh. It is the first NPP in Russia, which operates reactors of VVER-type (Vessel type Pressurized Water Reactor with light water under pressure). Each of the five plant reactors are prime Р a prototype of serial power reactors: No.1 power unit operates on VVER-210-type reactor, No.2 power unit Р VVER-365, No.3,4 power units Р VVER-440, No.5 power unit Р VVER-1000. At present, three power units are under operation (units 1 and 2 were stopped in 1984 and 1990, respectively).
