The Novovoronezh NPP will become an international education center training staff for foreign NPPs

On November 16, 2019, Alexander Gusev, the governor of the Voronezh region, Alexander Lokshin, the first deputy CEO in charge of operational management at the Rosatom State Corporation and the President of ASE Engineering Company, and Andrey Petrov, the CEO of the Rosenergoatom Joint-Stock Company and the First Vice-President of NPP at ASE Group, visited the Novovoronezh NPP (NV NPP).

During the trip, Alexander Gusev and Alexander Lokshin have signed an Agreement between the Voronezh region government and the Rosatom State corporation to allocate additional tax income paid by Rosatom into the regional budget for the development of Novovoronezh city to fund the social and economic development activities. It is worth noting that the Voronezh region was the first region to sign such Agreement in Rosatom in 2012. According to this document, the budget of Novovoronezh has received an extra amount of two billion rubles during the period of 2013-2019.

‘The Novovoronezh NPP is among the top three hugest taxpayers in the region. Following the launch of the 7th power block, the regional budget will be receiving up to 10 billion rubles annually. The Novovoronezh NPP is a key partner for us, and today we have reconfirmed our arrangements for joint projects’, Alexander Gusev, the governor of the Voronezh region.

When speaking about the prospect of the nuclear power city and the Novovoronezh NPP development, Alexander Lokshin, the first deputy CEO of operational management at the Rosatom State Corporation, Novovoronezh will evolve as an international education center for foreign NPPs built following the Russian project.

‘Nowadays, the Rosatom State Corporation is the leader in terms of building foreign NPPs working on the construction of 36 power blocks in 12 countries. The Novovoronezh NPP became the staff training base. In the next 5 years alone, we will have to train over 2,800 foreign specialists. While the NPP used to be a talent foundry for Russia only, it will now supply talents all over the world’, Alexander Lokshin, the first deputy CEO of operational management at the Rosatom State Corporation, said.

To conclude the visit, 25 industry employees who made substantial contribution into the construction of the 3rd Russian innovative 3+ generation power block received special awards.

Novovoronezh NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom JSC (a part of the largest Division of Rosatom State Corporation – Electric Power Division). The Plant is situated on the River Don bank 42 km South of Voronezh. This is the first NPP of Russia with VVER type reactors (Water-Water Power Reactors of containment type with water under pressure). Three reactors of the Plant are the main ones – the prototypes of the serial power reactors. The first power unit was commissioned in 1964, the second one - in 1969, the third one – in 1971, the fourth one – in 1972, and the fifth one – in 1980.

The power units No 1 and No 2 were shut down in 1984 and 1990, respectively. The power unit No 3 was shut down in 2016 for the decommissioning events. The power unit No 4 was shut down for modernization works. The power unit No 1 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 was commissioned on 27 February, 2017. The power unit No 2 is in the stage of commissioning works.
