The Leningrad NPP: more than 300 people from 40 countries participated in virtual tours of new PWR-1200 power units in 2021

In the outgoing 2021, more than 300 hundred people from 40 countries of the world got acquainted online with the device and principles of operation of innovative generation 3+ PWR-1200 power units of the Leningrad NPP (branch of Rosenergoatom, Electric Power Division of Rosatom State Corporation).

They included both countries that are already constructing nuclear power plants of Russian design on their territory - Turkey, Belarus, Bangladesh, Hungary, Egypt, etc., and those that are just considering the possibility of developing nuclear energy in their countries – Argentina, Vietnam, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, etc.

The restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic have become a driver for the development of new communication formats with a foreign audience, and today specialists of the Russian nuclear industry provide a unique opportunity to visit Russian nuclear power plants online, literally from the screen of their personal device.

In view of the ongoing pandemic and closed borders, such technologies allow nuclear scientists to acquaint their foreign colleagues and business partners in detail with the basic principles of operation of modern Russian power units and those innovative solutions that are used today in the nuclear power industry of Russia.

This year, various target audiences were involved in the orbit of the information and educational activities of the Leningrad NPP: visitors to international exhibitions (the 65th General Conference of the IAEA, the Egyptian-Russian Forum on Atomic Energy, COP26), as well as international experts and representatives of foreign media from partner countries of Rosatom and foreign students of training courses of the Technical Academy of Rosatom.

“We show not only the locations traditional for ordinary technical tours, but also points open only to the nuclear power plant workers, for example, the reactor hall.  In just one hour one can see in detail almost the entire process of electricity generation and get information about modern NPP safety systems, many of which have been applied in world practice for the first time,” said Vladimir Pereguda, director of the Leningrad NPP.

In turn, Nikita Konstantinov, deputy general director - business development director of Rosenergoatom, noted: “Today we have the opportunity to demonstrate the innovativeness of the approaches of the Russian nuclear industry in the international arena.  Power units of Russian design have competitive technical and economic characteristics, proven safety and compliance with all modern international standards, including IAEA recommendations."

According to him, virtual tours to nuclear power plants are a highly demanded product today.  “We receive a lot of positive feedback and applications for their implementation.  In 2021, this format was successfully implemented at the Leningrad and Beloyarsk NPPs, and in 2022 it is planned to conduct virtual tours at the Novovoronezh NPP, the site of the Kursk NPP-2 under construction, as well as at our unique floating nuclear power plant (FNPP) in Chukotka.”
