IAEA experts support the Kalinin NPP in preparation for OSART mission

The readiness of the Kalinin NPP to undergo the OSART international operational safety audit became the main topic of the seminar-meeting, which was held at the nuclear power plant from August 16 to 19, 2021. It was conducted by Senior Nuclear Safety Inspector of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), OSART Program Manager Yuri Martynenko.

The visit was held within the framework of an agreement between Rosenergoatom and the IAEA on the provision of advisory support in preparation for the OSART mission, which will take place at the Kalinin NPP in November this year.

“The OSART mission is not an inspection. This is a unique opportunity to conduct an independent and objective assessment of the state of the nuclear power plant's functions that are significant for safety, as well as identify areas for improvement,” said Y. Martynenko.

During four days, the seminar participants discussed the organizational aspects of the OSART mission, examined in detail the main documents, standards and requirements provided by the IAEA in the following areas of the upcoming inspection: radiation protection, operation, use of operating experience, training and certification, leadership and management for safety, technical support, accident management, maintenance and repair, chemistry. Yuri Martynenko carried out consultations with the heads and personnel of the nuclear power plant in a question-and-answer format, and visited production facilities.

According to the IAEA expert, the qualifications and professionalism of the Kalinin NPP workers in the field of operational safety and safety culture are at a very good level; in the process of preparing for the OSART mission, the staff underwent positive changes in the way of thinking in these areas. He also noted the open and constructive atmosphere of cooperation on the part of the nuclear power plant specialists.

Moreover, by the end of August at the Kalinin NPP a training seminar on the compliance of the nuclear power plant with the requirements in the field of probabilistic safety analysis will be conducted by an IAEA representative as a part of advisory support.
