The Kola NPP: the start of construction of the Kola NPP-2 is scheduled for 2028

The time frame for the construction of new power units at the Kola NPP-2 has been determined – the start of construction is scheduled for 2028, and the commissioning of the first unit is scheduled for 2034. This was announced by the director of the Kola NPP Vasily Omelchuk at a press conference on June 18, 2021. For the first time the event was held in an online format due to epidemiological restrictions.

It is assumed that the Kola NPP-2 will be a two-unit, that is, as a part of two innovative VVER-type power units with a capacity of 600 MW each with spectral regulation and high safety indicators. The project is currently in preparation for development.

“The service life of the power units of the 1st stage of the Kola NPP ends in 2033 and 2034, and today we are faced with the question of the need to replace the retired capacities. The decision to build the Kola NPP-2 was made at the end of the 20th century, but it was not implemented. Then a construction site was selected and preliminary surveys were carried out, ” said Vasily Omelchuk.

Let us recall that the Kola NPP is a unique energy enterprise and the first nuclear power plant built in the harsh climatic conditions of the Arctic. Today it transmits electricity through 5 power transmission lines, providing reliable power supply to the northern part of the Republic of Karelia, where there are most of the region's large industrial enterprises, as well as more than 50% of consumers of the Kola Peninsula.

According to experts, the implementation of the project for replacing retired capacities will not only allow confidently develop the economy and social sphere of the region, but also provide opportunities for the implementation of new industrial projects on its territory, including through the additional investment.
