Rosenergoatom: Electricity generation by Russian nuclear power plants increased by more than 7% in November 2020

In November 2020, the volume of electricity generation by Russian nuclear power plants (branches of Rosenergoatom JSC, part of the Electric Power Division of Rosatom) amounted to 19.737 billion kWh (against 18.420 billion kWh in the same period in 2019). Thus, the total electricity generation in the past month increased by 7.15%.

Since the beginning of 2020, the total electricity generation by all 11 nuclear power plants in Russia, including the floating nuclear thermal power plant in Chukotka (FNPP), is about 196.3 billion kWh, or 103.27% of the FAS balance (as of 03.12.2020). Installed capacity utilization factor (ICUF) is about 80%.

Let’s remember that in November, the RMBK-1000 NPU No 2 at Leningrad NPP was shut down due to decommissioning following 45 years of operation. It was, however, replaced by the more powerful and modern VVER-1200 NPU No 2, which is already connected to the power grid of the country. The experimental industrial stage of operation is ongoing, the completion of this stage and the commissioning of the unit are scheduled for 2021.

Note that last year, in 2019, Russian nuclear power plants set another record in terms of the amount of electricity generated, increasing the total output to 208.8 billion kWh (against 204.3 billion kWh a year earlier).

The Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) of Russia approved the plan for generating electricity for Russian nuclear power plants for 2020 in the amount of 207.614 billion kWh.

The share of nuclear generation today is about 19% of the total electricity generation in the country. This means that every fifth light bulb in the Russian Federation burns from the energy generated by nuclear power plants.
