Rosenergoatom: the Balakovo NPP has been announced the best nuclear power plant in Russia based on the outcomes of 2019

The results of the traditional corporate competition ‘The best Russian NPP’ held annually by the Rosenergoatom Joint-Stock Company (the Electric power division of the Rosatom State Corporation) have been announced. Based on the outcomes of 2019, the Balakovo NPP (city of Balakovo, the Saratov region) has been announced the best Russian nuclear power plant. The Bilibino NPP was the runner-up, with the Kola and the Kursk NPPs sharing the third place, meaning those nuclear power plants made it to the leaderboard, too.

While elaborating on how the contest took place this year, Andrey Petrov, the director of the Rosenergoatom Joint-Stock Company, noted that this year the competition was more challenging than ever. ‘Last year was extremely productive for the Company, we reached all of our milestones and got ahead. In 2019, we set a new record in terms of electric power output, that is, over 208.78 billion kilowatt-hours. Each and every station played a significant part in it. This is why this year we happened to see that the difference between the winner and the other participants was measured in single points, not dozens or hundreds of points. The competition was very tough, all NPPs challenged the leading ones, which is why we have 4 winners this year, not 3’.

The contest took into account 12 basic and 9 additional criteria related to safety, operational efficiency and technical maintenance, physical protection, and environment protection.

‘The best NPP of the year’ competition is held to identify, encourage and propagate the best practices used by the winning nuclear power plants.

Becoming a winner in the main corporate competition evidences that the NPP staff takes ownership in advancing their production culture, fostering stable equipment operation, improving the operational and the environmental safety.
