During the press breakfast on March 18, 2020, featuring a number of media representative, Sergey Migalin, the Deputy CEO and the Economy & Finance Director, has announced that the Rosenergoatom Joint-Stock Company (a part of the Rosatom State Corporation) is planning to build new data centers (DC).

It is important to note that Rosenergoatom has been developing this business area since 2015. The first data center was the Kalinin DC, which was commissioned in 2018. Nowadays, this is the primary data center of the Company utilized for its in-house needs and for a number of Rosatom State Corporation’s IT systems.

The company is also working on a number of commercial projects. As of 2019, the revenue exceeded 0.5 billion rubles, and in 2020, the Company plans to grow it up to 1 billion rubles.

The availability of an independent, resilient and powerful energy supply source, such as a nuclear power plant, as well as high facility safety standards make the DC’s location at the NPP site extremely helpful to store and to process critical data.

In the short-term prospective, Rosenergoatom will extend the data center global network and build a number of DCs in the next 3-4 years: in Innopolice, near Kazan (Tatarstan), in a special economic zone (an agreement between Rosenergoatom and the government of Tatarstan was signed last year), as well as in Moscow and Saint Petersburg.

The DC project in Innopolice presupposes that up to 1,000 racks will be housed at the ground floor, while, according to S. Migalin, one of the two DCs in Moscow can be referred to as a Hyper-DC, as its capacity will exceed 2,000 racks. The second Moscow DC is expected to have 500 racks, while the one in Saint-Petersburg will have a capacity of 500-1,000 units.
