The Novovoronezh NPP: the construction and the launch of the Rooppur NPP will be based on the experience of the Novovoronez NPP nuclear power experts

January 18, 2018, marked the end of the visit of the Bangladeshi delegation headed by the Roooppur NPP construction project director Mohammad Shawkat Akbar to the Novovoronezh NPP.

The main goal of the visit was to get acquainted with the process of the pre-launch operations at the 2nd power block of the Novovoronezh NPP-2 (No.7 of the Novovoronezh NPP), the operational technologies at the 1st power block of the the Novovoronezh NPP-2 (No.6 of the Novovoronezh NPP), and the staff training process at the Novovoronezh NPP’s training center.

‘When visiting the sixth power block, we saw how it is being operated. And since the sixth and the seventh power blocks serve as a reference for our plant, we could ensure we made the right choice. The experience we got when reviewing the sixth power block and witnessing the pre-commissioning activities at the seventh power block will be heavily used when launching the Rooppur NPP’, Mohammad Shawkat Akbar, the Roooppur NPP construction project director, said.

The delegation of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh was the first foreign team to visit the pre-launched 2nd power block of the Novovoronezh NPP-2. Besides, during the trip, the guests took a look at the block control room and the machinery hall of the operating 1st power block of the Novovoronezh NPP-2, visited the observation platform, and had a sightseeing tour around Novovoronezh, the city of nuclear power experts.

In 2011, Russia and the People’s Republic of Bangladesh entered into an intergovernmental Agreement on the Rooppur NPP construction, which is taking place on the bank of the river Padma, 160 kilometers away from Dhaka, the capital of the country. The foundation stone of the nuclear power plant was laid in autumn 2013. It is planned that the first order of the NPP will consist of two power blocks with Russian VVER reactors, with the capacity of 1200 megawatt each. The innovative power blocks of the Novovoronezh NPP serve as a reference for the Rooppur NPP.

Novovoronezh NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom JSC (a part of the largest Division of Rosatom State Corporation – Electric Power Division). The Plant is situated on the River Don bank 42 km South of Voronezh. This is the first NPP of Russia with VVER type reactors (Water-Water Power Reactors of containment type with water under pressure). Three reactors of the Plant are the main ones – the prototypes of the serial power reactors. The first power unit was commissioned in 1964, the second one - in 1969, the third one – in 1971, the fourth one – in 1972, and the fifth one – in 1980.

The power units No 1 and No 2 were shut down in 1984 and 1990, respectively. The power unit No 3 was shut down in 2016 for the decommissioning events. The power unit No 4 was shut down for modernization works. The power unit No 1 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 was commissioned on 27 February, 2017. The power unit No 2 is in the stage of commissioning works.
