Rosenergoatom: two Russian NPPs at once made it to the top three contestants of ‘The most environmentally friendly nuclear power organization of 2017’ competition

The Rosatom State Corporation has summed up the results of the annual competition ‘The most environmentally friendly nuclear power organization’. The award ceremony took place in Moscow on December 18, 2018, during the meeting of the Public Council of Rosatom. Alexey Likhachev, the CEO of the Corporation, presented the awards.

48 organizations making huge environmental impact and operating in the nuclear power industry participated in the competition, with nuclear power plants, the affiliates of the Rosenergoatom Joint-Stock Company (parts of the Rosatom electric power division) being among the contestants.

The committee noted the contribution that the Joint-Stock Company and its affiliate offices made into the environment protection and fostering environmental security, which was evidenced by the materials presented at the competition.
Based on the outcomes of 2017, two companies among the Concern affiliates took winning places: the first place went to the Novovoronezh NPP, and the third one was landed by the Kalinin NPP. The Smolensk NPP became a winner in the special nomination ‘The most environmentally friendly organization within the Rosenergoatom Joint-Stock Company’.

It is important to say that environment protection and responsible usage of natural resources are top priorities for the Rosenergoatom Joint-Stock Company and the nuclear power plants.

For example, in 2017, the NPPs’ expenses for environment protection have exceeded 3.8 billion rubles (in 2016, those expenses were around 3.5 billion rubles). These investments help to keep the environment around the NPPs at a proper level.

The goal of ‘The most environmentally friendly nuclear power organization’, which was introduced in 2013, is to improve the efficiency of the activities taken as a part of the environment protection policy both by the Rosatom State Corporation and other organizations making an environmental impact as well as to detect the companies that make the hugest contributions into environment protection.

Rosenergoatom JSC is a leading enterprise of the largest Electric Power Division of Rosatom State Corporation. The JSC is the largest generating company in Russia and the second largest in the world in terms of nuclear generating capacity. It includes all 10 Russian nuclear power plants that have the status of branches, as well as enterprises providing for the activities of the generating company. In total, these 10 NPPs have 36 power units with a total installed capacity of 30 GW. Currently, Russian NPPs produce about 19% of the total electric energy generated in the country.
