Rostekhnadzor completed the additional service life readiness check of the power unit No 3 of Balakovo NPP

On 12 October, Balakovo NPP successfully completed the check of the power unit No 3 readiness for further operation after its design life. The Commission of the Volga Interregional Territorial Administration of the Federal Environmental, Industrial and Nuclear Supervision Service has confirmed that the Nuclear Plant has taken measures to extend the Plant’s service life (PLE).

For two weeks the inspectors worked in two main areas: they checked the compliance of the technical documentation and unit equipment with all the federal requirements in the field of atomic energy use, and the accuracy of the substantiating information that was submitted by Balakovo NPP along with the application for a license.

“We have completed all the tasks that we set for ourselves during the check. We consider the results to be positive”, the Deputy Head of the Volga ITA Aleksandr Gribkov summed up the Commission’s work at the final meeting with the Plant’s senior management. He noted that all the measures for equipment inspection, replacement and modernization that were planned for the power unit No 3 as part of the PLE were performed by the Plant within the stipulated time period. The accuracy of the information that had been presented by Balakovo NPP in the set of substantiating documents was confirmed.

The life of the power unit No 3 is extended in accordance with the “Development of the Nuclear Power Industry Complex” State Program of the Russian Federation and the “Program for extending the life of existing NPP power units of Rosenergoatom JSC in 2013–2023”.

The final step will be to obtain a license for extended life, which is expected at the end of this year.

The Balakovo NPP is an affiliate for the Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is located on the left bank of the Saratov water reservoir, 10 kilometers to the north-east from the city of Balakovo, the Saratov Region.
