At Novovoronezh NPP the representatives of the government delegation of the Republic of Rwanda had a look at the advanced nuclear technologies

On 12 September, 2018 the delegation of the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Infrastructure of the Republic of Rwanda visited Novovoronezh Nuclear Power Plant (NVNPP).

The head of the delegation, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Rwanda in the Russian Federation Jeanna d’Arc Mujavamaria shared the results of the visit, “Rwanda is planning to develop the nuclear power industry. The construction of the nuclear power plant is our national project. I am impressed with the practices that are implemented at the new power unit of Novovoronezh NPP, this is a wonderful facility where all the safety conditions are fulfilled.”

The participants of the working group visited the Training Centre of Novovoronezh NPP where the specialists of a number of countries-partners of Rosatom are trained. The delegation visited the unit’s control room and the turbine island of the power unit No 6 – the world’s first power unit of Generation 3+ that was put into industrial operation on 27 February, 2018. Also, the guests visited the viewing point of the Phase 4.

It is to be recalled that on 22 June, 2018 the memorandum of understanding between Rosatom SC and the Ministry of Infrastructure of the Republic of Rwanda was signed. Now, the project of the intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the field of the peaceful use of the nuclear power is being developed. Before the trip to NVNPP, the delegation visited Obninsk, the first NPP built in the USSR, and put into industrial operation in 1954.

Novovoronezh NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom JSC (a part of the largest Division of Rosatom State Corporation – Electric Power Division). The Plant is situated on the River Don bank 42 km South of Voronezh. This is the first NPP of Russia with VVER type reactors (Water-Water Power Reactors of containment type with water under pressure). Three reactors of the Plant are the main ones – the prototypes of the serial power reactors. The first power unit was commissioned in 1964, the second one - in 1969, the third one – in 1971, the fourth one – in 1972, and the fifth one – in 1980.

The power units No 1 and No 2 were shut down in 1984 and 1990, respectively. The power unit No 3 was shut down in 2016 for the decommissioning events. The power unit No 4 was shut down for modernization works. The power unit No 1 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 was commissioned on 27 February, 2017. The power unit No 2 is in the stage of commissioning works.
