Rostov NPP: the power unit No 2 is put into industrial operation at the capacity level of 104%

On 28 August the Federal Environmental, Industrial and Nuclear Supervision Service of Russia (Rostekhnadzor) made amendments in the conditions of validity of the license for operation of Rostov NPP power unit No 2 (Volgodonsk, a subsidiary of Rosenergoatom JSC, a part of Rosatom’s Electric Power Division) that permit its industrial operation at the capacity level of 104% from nominal level.

From 2012 the power unit No 2 of Rostov NPP has been in the Pilot and Industrial Operation at the capacity level of 104%. The operation of the power unit No 2 of Rostov NPP at the level of 104% is carried out in accordance with the industrial Program of increase in electric power generation at the operating power units of Rosenergoatom’s NPPs. In order to put the power unit No 2 in work at 104% capacity level, the General Constructor of the reactor unit Gidropress OKB fulfilled all safety cases. During the schedule and preventive repairs the reactor unit of power unit No 2 was modernized, the modernized equipment was tested at the increased capacity. The results of this testing corresponded to the safety requirements.

The power unit operation at the increased capacity of 104% is the additional electric power generation for development of the South of Russia.

It is to be recalled that on 16 February, 2017 in Volgodonsk the public hearing on the materials of license validation for the fulfillment of the activity in the area of nuclear power usage, the Operation of the power unit No 2 of Rostov NPP in 18-month fuel cycle at the reactor unit capacity of 104% from nominal level, was held.

The power unit No 1 is in the industrial operation with the reactor unit capacity of 104%.

The power unit No 3 is under the Pilot and Industrial Operation with the reactor unit capacity of 104%. 

Rostov NPP is the branch of the Rosenergoatom (a part of the Electric Energy Division – the largest division of Rosatom State Corporation). The enterprise is located at the shore of Tsimlyansk Reservoir 13 km away from the town of Volgodonsk. The NPP operates the reactors of VVER-1000 type with the installed capacity of 1,000 MW. The power unit No 1 was put into industrial operation in 2001, No 2 – in 2010, No 3 – in September, 2015. The power unit No 4 was started up in February, 2018.
